Solaris Seethes is a science fiction book written by Janet McNulty. Published in 2014 by MMP Publishing, it is about a young woman given the job of saving her world, as well as every other world in the universe. Rynah has just become engaged to Klanor, only to find out that he used her to steal the crystal she protects, that in turn protects her planet. Rynah’s grandfather, Marlow, dedicated his life to the prophecy that states four people would be needed to find six crystals given to different planets to protect, but when brought together would become a weapon that would destroy worlds. The person who possesses the weapon would be the ruler. Rynah, Alaric, Solon, Tom, and Brie must do anything they can to prevent Klanor from finding the other five crystals.
I like how the book immediately throws you into the action. The reader becomes interested and invested in how these people will fulfill their quest. This is what kept me reading until the end. There are very few typos or grammatical errors. The dialogue flows easily and you get a real sense of personalities and personal conflicts between the main characters. I really liked how the story grips the reader from the beginning and pulls you to the end. The author left a big cliffhanger that might make the reader want to find out what happens in the next book.
The main character, Rynah, is sometimes hard to take and too rigid. I really didn't like her very much. She is not a sympathetic person and I wasn't rooting for her like I was for the other people in her group. The other characters in the group also have issues, but by the end of the book had shown personal growth, unlike Rynah. Rynah is still the same unlikeable person at the end of the book as she was in the beginning. I felt that the four people who help Rynah with her quest weren't given enough of a backstory and were awkwardly introduced.
I expected that this being a world that was totally unlike earth, Lanyr would seem more foreign or alien. Instead, I felt like it was a copy of earth. The background descriptions didn't sound any different than an imitation of Earth. The names of the buildings were familiar and a military with generals, privates, etc. made it sound like a military base. For example, while on a planet searching for the crystals one of the plants was called “milkweed”. I feel this should have been described instead of named. The people were really the only things that were described as being more foreign and were what I would expect to be from another planet.
The settings are weak and the background is poorly developed. The main character is not a likable protagonist, she seems inflexible and unable to develop in the way the other characters did. The progress of the book was stilted in places. Rynah doesn't seem motivated to save anyone as much as she wants revenge against Klanor. Also, four random people were chosen with no apparent rhyme or reason. The author hooked the reader with the race to find the crystals, but there wasn't enough of a backstory.
I gave this book a 2 out of 4 rating. The plot in this book has many holes in it. The introduction of the four people related to the prophecy was not very well fleshed out. The settings were descriptive but sounded like a carbon copy of earth and not unknown planets. The characters need to be better developed. By the end of the book I wasn't interested in reading the next book in the series. I would recommend this book to a young adult reader who likes a science fiction book with lots of action.
