Escape by Belle Ami is a romantic thriller that takes place in current Iran. Cyrus Hassani is the attaché to the deputy director of Oghab2; a secret organization intent on getting Iran nuclearized so they can take out Israel once and for all. When Layla Wallace is kidnapped with her boyfriend in Dubai, Cyrus is sent to rescue her from the dreaded Evin Prison. He must gain her trust and decide how best to use her as a bargaining chip for their enemies. However, Layla proves to be more valuable than she or anybody could ever imagine.

Layla’s father, a renowned nuclear physicist could be the turning point the Oghab2 needs to finally fulfill their dream. Undercover for what seems his entire life, Mossad agent Cyrus Hassani is given a critical mission; get Layla out of Iran or take her life. He has no room in his life for anything but his mission so when sparks fly he must choose between his soul or his job.

The prologue and first two chapters of this book can be confusing. The author introduces a lot of abbreviations and their meanings trying to explain the intricacies of the Iran government. For example: Oghab2, IAEA, MOIS and countless others can make this book hard to read. Additionally, words and phrases such as habibi, agha, and assalamu alaikum are not explained in context, with no index at the end of the book. The story starts off slow with the ingénue of the book not entering until chapter 3.

I found that that two main characters gave into the situation a bit too easily. They were a little too trusting for my tastes. This is book one in the, Tip of the Spear, series. This sets the precedent for the next book so I feel like the author should have given us a clearer picture of the main characters and assisting characters. She gives very basic outlines of what the characters look like; Layla has red hair and is very beautiful. Does she have a patrician nose or aristocratic features? These are things that would have helped the book along.

Although the book started slow I did enjoy reading the romance part of the book, but the ending seemed a little lacking. I’m hoping one of her next book gives an epilogue of sort on our two main characters; Layla and Cyrus. So, in short, I give Escape by Belle Ami a rating of 2 out of 4 stars. I enjoyed reading the book but felt some readers wouldn’t have kept on reading past the 1st chapter. With no index to explain the foreign words, readers are left to ponder the picture the author was trying to paint.

I like your critical review about this. I most admit that some things you mentioned, I either forgot, or I just ignored, like the annoying abbreviations. Overall I really enjoyed your review.
