If you are into folklore, dreams and magic, this book is a definite must read. The story of a young unwanted, misplaced orphan girl going on a very dangerous adventure with people she barely knew; her grandfather Tom (whom she just met), his longtime friend William, and Williams daughter Myra (the protector of her peoples legends and father reformed archeologist) will definitely keep you glued to your seat. Tom has unfinished business in the Olympic Mountains on the peninsula, that must be finished before the place is ransacked by industrialists for the mineral erbium. William sees this as his last adventure since his age comes with the great many ailments any one can expect. Myra is there as a guide and buffer to make the trip as smooth and painless on the two old geysers.
With their bags packed and ready for the next day’s travel, no one expected the knock on the door to be a burden for the journey. In the end William convinced them all not to cancel the trip and take Sarah with them. Little did they know they were all in for one big shock of an adventure… This story will lead you on a path of magic filled with adventure, history and legends. It brings together different cultures and how they are intertwined in their history, we all came from somewhere and our stories might not be as different as you think. Science , legends and facts battle in this story, but comes together in the magic of a history long forgotten, but not lost
I liked this book, because it appealed to the adventurer and discoverer in me. It has so many facets coming together that it speaks to a variety of interests. The way the author throws you into Sarah’s adventure really transports you and makes you feel part of the adventure. I really liked the descriptive names the other characters were given, because they not only make your imagination run wild, but also give you insight into their character such as the type of person they were. For example the character Thrower; the name already tells you that he is a strong man with pride in his achievements, which makes him very boastful. His character reveals these traits as the story unfolds. I also like the fact that Sarah tells her story in pieces which keeps you guessing and wondering, always looking out for what happened next.
I rate this book 3 out of 4, because it is very well written, the story flows very easily even though more than one story is being told at once. The writing is done professionally and I did not come across any mistakes, which leaves me to conclude that the book has been professionally edited. The book Strong heart, will appeal to many different audiences; such as the youth, historians, researchers, adventurers, those passionate about legends and the truths behind them etc. I would definitely say this will be a good read for the youth since it contains a lot of elements that they may also be facing, such as being misunderstood or their word not being trusted. It also can teach them of courage and defending what you believe, not to doubt yourself because others do. It is very inspirational in that sense, but as I previously mentioned, this book can appeal to many and all, since it covers a bit of interests.
The simplicity of the writing makes it for an easy read, and the charts and landmarks noted in the first few pages gives the story an authentic feel and helps you as the reader to understand the layout and journey that was taken. It is not only a voyage and adventure, but also a building of character and the display of our most basic and ferocious instincts; survival and procreation. We all want to live the best lives we can and leave something behind for the generations to follow by which they can commemorate us and remember us by. Be it in drawings, skills or just legends and stories told around a warm camp fire…
