Heaven and Earth is a sci-fi book which focuses on the similar problems of two different races, the Treretumians and the Earthlings. According to the book, the Treretumians is the native of the planet Treretum which is located at the binary star system of Sirius. In the beginning of the story it showed that the Treretumians have already visited our Mother Earth many thousands of years ago in the hopes of observing the species and help us advance by teaching us a lot of things such as building bridges out of raw materials. They also constructed a few pyramids in our planet to use as designated landing sites for future missions. Sadly, these efforts were wasted due to the incapability of the Earthlings to understand and use the things that the Treretumians gave us.
Fast forward to the present, the Treretumians held their third mission to visit Earth, headed by Egral Egroeg. The aim is to collect data about the current situation on Earth, specifically in Houston, Area 51 and the United States coastline. Meanwhile a group of scientist gathered in Houston for a conference in the name of national security. But they soon found out that, much to their dismay, that the government wants to interfere with their projects and Olga Ramos refuses to play with it causing her to be the target of suspicion.
With the help of her newly found comrades, Dr. Billy Ruben Welch and Sam, they tackle one of the major health related problem that the government wants to hide from the public: Cadmium poisoning. Olga’s dedication to make a move to change things caught the attention of Nivla, a Treretumian who, together with his drones offered help but with a price.
To be honest, this is not the first book I’ve read with such theme but what makes Heaven and Earth different from other books in the same genre is the ton of information about cadmium poisoning. The author mentioned at the beginning of the book that you can skip the cadmium poisoning facts section of each chapters but I would suggest that you read those parts; it will help you understand Olga and Dr. Welch’s point of view on a personal level. I have to admit that the topic certainly hit me so much since my Mom had Type 2 Diabetes and it made me realize, a bit too late, that those facts certainly made sense. I wished that I read this book earlier. But I am glad that I can share the information with other people and I hope you do the same way too after reading this book.
Aside from the numerous facts about cadmium poisoning which is a health related issue, the book also branched out to other topics such as the harsh reality of what is actually happening to our environment, the government and our society in general. It was such a good wake up call.
I have to say that I like this book and I will give it 3 out of 4 stars. I gave it such rating because I noticed that there are a couple of blank pages in the soft copy that I read which is a waste of space and although informative, I simply didn’t like the slow phase of the story I started to get in the swing of things at around chapter 12.
Overall, I can say that this book is worth the read. It is informative and not your average sci-fi book. I would like to thank the author, Dr. Arturo Riojas for sharing the information about cadmium poisoning. And I believe that a lot of people will benefit from said knowledge.
