The book on review is a non-fiction written by JODY B MILLER in 2017. It is titled ‘FROM DRIFT TO SHIFT’. The book is published in New York by Morgan James Publishing.

The main goal of the book is to encourage readers to live their dreams. The author points out that majority of the people just find themselves in their jobs and other lifestyles by the force of the society, family, peers, teachers, etc. without seeking to know what they actually want and what is compatible with their personalities. She said a time comes when an individual wakes up to the key to her happiness in life which most of the time would be different from the path she has been following. At such critical times, the individual would have to reorder her life, jettison some old beliefs, break away from some relationships, terminate certain profitable employments, etc. in order to attain the discovered happiness.

Some of the people who have made their shifts in life accidentally discovered through some intrinsic pointers and inner clock that they can do more and they applied such discoveries and their lives were better for it. But some others had to go through some tragic occurrences before they discover their real place in life. The author features the stories of some people who experienced shifting from what they were doing to what gives them maximum happiness in life. Her comments on those experiences are intermittently inserted to drive home her points. Her personal experience of drifting in life before she made her own shift was also revealed.

The value of the book for educational, institutional and career counselors cannot be overemphasized. Since majority of the people go through ‘drifts’ in life, the book is recommended for all. Parents would especially find the book indispensable in order to instil the facts of life to the young minds so as to prepare them for the necessary ‘shifts’ in life. I will rate the book 3 OUT OF FOUR.

I rate this book high because it is an interesting read. It makes allowance for all kinds of people from different cultural, religious, educational, environmental and philosophical backgrounds. I agree with many of the opinions expressed by the author especially on the theme of the book. The need for individuals to stop mere drifting in accordance to the expectations of the society to what brings them happiness within the framework of the law is a reality and the earlier each person makes the shift, the better.

The author brought out the role of religious and cultural beliefs in sharpening man’s intuition for recognizing his place and what matters to him in life in the featured stories. Beliefs play a vital role in waking man up to the realities of what nature has empowered him with. However, the readers need to be warned that religious beliefs could have its negative effects especially when such beliefs fix a man’s attention on self or some other special individuals rather than doing good deeds to all.

However, the author in a down to earth manner, attempted to present the stories of people without editing their words. This leads to the use of rated words which could be a hindrance for people with cultures different from that in which the author lives, who may be unaware of the censorship in America. For example, the manner in which some censored words such as f*** or s*** are used may impede the understanding of readers who are not familiar with such.

Many motivational and self-development books give similar information. Nature has blessed humans with much potential but these are not immediately obvious to us. It takes self-discovery and coaching to maximize these potentials.

Stephen R. Covey in his book ‘THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE’ wrote about ‘social mirror’ which is a major reason why people do not live up to their potentials. The solution to this according to him is for people to be proactive (or be responsible) for their lives. He said one should be able to choose for oneself what is best or one would be acted upon by other forces in life.

In the book, ‘WHO MOVED MY CHEESE?’ By Spencer Johnson, M.D., it was revealed that change is a necessity in life and people should anticipate and get ready for it. Many people however prefer to stay in familiar territory, not willing to deal with change but when the 'cheese' is moved by other forces, such a person becomes disoriented as was the case of Nathan, one of the friends who gathered to discuss what they learned from the story of ‘cheese’.

If readers follow and put into practice the ideas presented in this book, there is the possibility that many will find happiness in life. It would also be discovered that happiness in life involves sharing with others and living for the good of all. It will help people to realize that running the ‘rat race’ in life does not bring fulfillment and that working more and more to earn more and more would not bring ultimate happiness.

The book is a further confirmation of my personal experience. In it I found people who have experienced drifts occasioned by different reasons and I could see that though there is no guarantee that the process would be a bed of roses, the result would be favorable and would bring personal fulfillment. Reading the book has reinforced my opinion about the purpose and ultimate goal of man in life.

The question answered by the book is, how do you deal with the situation you find yourself in life? Drift along or determine your own course? It is often said that when life presents you with a lemon, you can let it sour your life away or you can make lemonade out of it. We can only do that when we are aware of our relevance in life. According to the author, ‘When we don’t think that we are relevant in the world, that we don’t matter and that no one cares, we stop trying. When we stop trying, all sorts of bad come our way’. Also, ‘it’s important to look for the signs when you are wondering if you should make a shift. They are there and you need to be observant… pay attention to what you see, and hear and more importantly, imagine. The capacity of our brains to realize our desires is strong’.

Readers would profit from this book if they can be alert in life to watch out for the signals for what would give them ultimate satisfaction in life and then take opportunities as they present themselves to actualize their dreams.
