Can I be Frank? is the first of the series of Father Frank novels written by Rob Wyatt. It is a hilarious fiction novel depicting the life of a young priest named Francis “Frank” Gold.

After having been rejected as a vicar in the Church of England, Father Frank was sent to Florida to lead a parish there. His coming to USA was very eventful: he bumped into an old lady in an airport wheelchair, went into the wrong queue of passengers who just arrived, was questioned and taken in by the Immigration officers, and splattered his bag’s slimy contents in the US Customs counter.

Luckily, he made his way out of the airport and was met by Father William, also known as Bill. Bill gave him some briefing about what to expect in the parish, introduced him to the people that he will meet in Florida, and gave him a glimpse of the American culture.

His first mass, which happened immediately after the day he arrived, was unexpectedly good. He gave a sincere, heart-warming, and humorous homily which was loved by most of the parishioners.

This sudden popularity did not last long. Things started to change when he undermined Gene Charmois, the biggest contributor of the St. Francis of Assisi Parish Church. Charmois used his money, power, and influence to entice people (who are mostly, if not all, his employees) to stop coming to the church.

Father Frank was close to giving up if not for the support of Martha, Judge Karl Matthews, and Dr. Ginny Pierce. Eventually, the four of them found out about Charmois’ criminal acts, persecuted him, and brought people to the parish once again. This time, people went to church because they wanted to and not because someone made them to.

I was entertained by this book. I appreciated every bit of humor and also empathized with the misery of the main character when people started to doubt him. He was a young clergyman, new to his job as a parish priest in a place that is new to him, with people that he only knew recently. The author did a very good job in crafting just the right mix of words, background, and character set-up for a reader to feel all this.

In a funny way, he also illustrated the difference between the American and British cultures. Even I was surprised to learn that. Their languages themselves, although both English, have a lot of contextual variation.

Overall, I give this a 4 out of 4 stars rating. There were grammatical and typographical errors but these were very minimal and did not affect my understanding, interest, and enjoyment of the story.
