The book, A Good Boy by Anthony Andre is one unlike many others. It begins with Bishop Beverly White introducing a new pastor to a church in North Carolina that is beginning to splinter and struggle to stay open. The church was made up of primarily the elderly generation when Wesley Aames became the pastor. The church was originally not accepting of their new minister. As the readers progress through the book, they will find the Wesley is a man very alike to them, someone with many skeletons in his closet, but still someone who is trying to do right by his beliefs.

As the book progresses, Wesley is faced with the many trials and tribulations that a new preacher faces, the standard things, including a non-accepting congregation. Suddenly, he is faced with something no one wishes to experience, the sudden loss of a youth in his already dying church.

While I believe that the book was well written, I did not truly enjoy it. I found it often be too preachy. Yes, the story centers on a church, and it is to be expected that the morality of the church is a key aspect of the story. However, I as a reader, did not expect to feel uncomfortable while reading when my morality did not align with that of the author.

I did however, enjoy the character development that is seen throughout the novel. Wesley grows as a leader and a preacher throughout these tribulations in ways that I could see myself reflected in. His goal is truly to just make a difference with the time that he has on Earth, and help as many people as he can in the process, which is reflected in his several jobs that try to connect people with God.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I found it to be intriguing, despite my lack of religiosity. The amount of details included in scene descriptions really made me feel as though I was with Wesley in North Carolina. I chose to give this book three stars because it felt strongly rooted in the people that it was trying to appeal to, this is the caliber of works of fiction that I would expect to find in a Christian book store. There were very limited errors within the manuscript, and the story was well developed. I elected not to give this novel four stars because it at times became so invested in the religious aspect of the work that is was difficult to connect with. Additionally, this work is part of a series, which is important to note if you are not looking to invest yourself into a serial work.
