The 11:05 Murders by Brian O'Hare is a fast-paced crime fiction novel. Although it is the second volume of the Inspector Sheehan mysteries series, the book is standalone. It is not necessary to read the first book in order to fully enjoy the second one.
This book features Inspector Sheehan, Detectives Denise Stewart and Tom Allen, and Prosecutor Robert Turner as its main characters. It is written from the perspective of Detective Denise Stewart, who has joined the police force following the footsteps of her father and grand-father. However, she has had to face a lot of sexism and other issues in her previous workplaces. After unveiling a major corruption scandal in her department, she gets transferred to Serious Crimes Unit to work under Inspector Sheehan. The team is faced with multiple problems at once: murders on two consecutive Tuesdays at the same time (11:05 p.m.); a case of excessive domestic violence; a dangerous stalker who is hideously yet silently stalking detective Denise; a mysterious informant; and attacks on Detective Tom Allen. Somehow, it seems as though all of them are perpetrated by just one person, and connected to a rape that occurred 14 years ago. What is the connection? It is up to Serious Crimes Unit to find out the criminal and bring him to justice.
I really liked the book and I couldn’t help but finish it in one sitting. The characters are all portrayed in a very apt manner. Inspector Sheehan is a well-known detective who is respected by his entire team. He sets an example of a good leader and maintains unity in the team. He is also famous for his excellent deductions. Detective Stewart is a courageous and beautiful woman who solves cases through her heart rather than her mind. Robert Turner is a very handsome and famous prosecutor and takes a special interest in the case because he likes Detective Stewart. Tom Allen is another detective who finds himself falling for her and tries to help her whenever she is in trouble.
In spite of the fabulously written plot, the book has a few drawbacks. Firstly, the names of the two detectives, i.e. Sheehan and Stewart are too close and sometimes it is confusing as to which one is which. I had to turn back the pages a few times and check who is who. The names could have been a bit different and easier to distinguish. Secondly, I found it very easy to guess who the killer was when I was halfway through the book. There are a lot of hints thrown about for the reader, and an attentive reader who reads a lot of crime novels will find it quite easy to guess the killer, thus ruining the suspense.
Due to these reasons, I give The 11:05 Murders by Brian O'Hare 3 out of 4 stars. The book deserves more than 3 stars but is not completely up to the 4-star mark. I could not find any grammatical mistakes during the reading. The depth and detail that the author uses really allowed for me to become part of the book. I felt like I was there during the investigation from the start to the adrenaline-fueled finale. I will highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an edge of your seat thriller. I look forward to reading more books by Brian O'Hare.
