[Following is a volunteer review of "To God Be The Glory! We Must Never Give Up" by Charles Wiley.]
To God Be The Glory! We Must Never Give Up: This Is My Story Growing Up Black In America by Charles Wiley is not an accusatory book but an intimately personal one. Wiley invites us to read, reflect, and better comprehend systemic issues through understanding one man's journey. From the earliest inning, the deck was stacked against his young life. An impoverished upbringing, a fatherless childhood, accidents, and medical crises—any one of these could have derailed his trajectory. Yet, in bearing witness to his mother's sacrifice, Wiley seemed to draw strength, and his primordial will to survive was forged.
Beyond parenting and community leadership, Wiley fought workplace discrimination and racial profiling. Though the deck often seemed stacked against him, Wiley persevered even when doubting himself. During those times of deepest uncertainty, his faith reminds him of God's plan. Wiley's strength and resilience in pursuing his vision despite obstacles deserve immense admiration. His example encourages others to stand up when the system tries to break them down.
I love the determination and grit that were portrayed in this book. Despite being confronted with a litany of challenges and setbacks, Wiley refused to succumb to the weight of his difficult circumstances. Instead, he embarked on a courageous quest to reclaim his agency and assert his rights with integrity. His determination was not merely a personal pursuit; it was something to look up to for those around him, illuminating the path to a brighter future.
Another thing I love about this book is that it teaches selflessness and goodwill. Wiley's accomplishments extended far beyond his individual triumphs. He recognized the impact he could have on his family and the broader community and channeled his energy into initiatives that would uplift and empower others. The founding of the Black Positive Brothers (BPB) showed his commitment to collective progress. There is nothing I disliked about this book, and as a result, I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend it to those who have had experience with racism. Finally, I encountered some errors while reading the book. Another round of editing would rid the book of these errors.
