A Kingdom Forgotten is a sci-fi, fantasy and fiction novel. It is the first book in "A Throne of Souls" series by Charles W. McDonald Jr. It is a book spanning different worlds and civilizations with multiple characters having different stories but still having one major rallying point, magic.

Damon has damned his soul to get unfathomable power as a mage (lamean). He knows his time is almost up, but wants to defy all the hidden forces that seem to want to control his fate while leaving behind a legacy. He is seen as an epitome of extreme evil and sometimes as someone capable of love and rational thinking. Radin is a young man just coming of age. He falls in love with Elise and he is thrust into contesting to be The One, by powers beyond his control. His eyes are opened to a new world filled with many variables he has to contend with. He is accompanied in his quest by people he knows very little about, who might also have hidden and conflicting agendas of their own.

I'm happy I took my time to read this book, and I would definitely get the subsequent releases of the series. The book reminds me of Malazan book of the fallen and Game of thrones amongst others due to the fact that the characters are interwoven and the story builds up gradually, each chapter tells a story of a different time line in a different world but which still relates to the present, helping one to piece it all together. This book requires patience and focus from the reader because the first few chapters need to be read and pieced together, before you gain momentum and lose yourself in the book. Another thing I love about the book is the way the author was able to bring together sci-fi as in experiments with magic in a nice way.

The only negative part of the book is the grammatical errors as well as some abrupt changes in the text font which were unnecessary. Readers who are looking for a quick interesting read might be disappointed due to the slow story build up.

I can't give the book 4 stars because of the slow build up and the errors. I would have given it 2.5 stars as it only gets captivating as you piece the story together, but it is not allowed. Therefore, I rate A Kingdom Forgotten 3 out of 4 stars. It is a lengthy read, I would recommend it to fantasy and fiction fans looking for a long term read.
