[Following is a volunteer review of "Butterfly Awakens" by Meg Nocero.]
Butterfly Awakens by Meg Nocero
‘Butterfly Awakens’ is a fascinating memoir by former federal immigration prosecutor, motivational speaker and award-winning author Meg Nocero. Though unfamiliar with Nocero’s writing style, I happily chose this book because of my special inclination towards memoirs and I did not regret my decision.
In this memoir, Nocero depicts her unparalleled bond with her mother who strongly believed in her daughter’s potentiality. Their religious faith provides strength to their relationship but her mother’s death due to breast cancer shattered her soul. Coming from a strong and supportive family, Nocero could not move on from her loss. She eagerly tries to help herself through counselling, religious healers, and traditional medicines but nothing works for her.
But it is not a story of helplessness, depression, and failure, rather it shows Nocero’s journey towards healing and gaining self-confidence. All these are possible only for her unfaltering faith in God. Throughout her memoir, she voices for showing love, kindness, gratitude, friendship, and sisterhood. She openly acknowledges the impact of Oprah Winfrey, Liz Gilbert, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Dr. Habib Sadeghi, and others on her journey towards healing and attaining peace. She even does not fail to mention Paulo Coelho as her spiritual guide. She also takes a pilgrimage to El Camino de Santiago in Spain to have solace and confidence to tread the new path towards authorship, and entrepreneurship but mostly to find a new meaning in life.
The memoir has an amazing description of the work culture in the USA. Nocero shows how women are supposed to be second-grade employees regardless of their contribution towards a particular field. She also raises her voice against Trump’s administration particularly his laws against the immigrants. Her memoir shows the readers the rays of hope even in a pandemic-stricken world.
I truly enjoyed Nocero’s easy and fluid writing style and her profound faith in goodness and generosity. She uses various motivational and insightful quotes and mentions a large number of songs and movies which are additional gifts for the readers. She openly criticizes the religious orthodoxy of Catholic churches though she is an earnest believer of Jesus Christ. She never fails to hail her Italian culture and it seems marvelous to me. The pictures at the end add authenticity to the memoir.
I feel quite shocked when Nocero seeks help from religious healers and alternative medicines rather than modern allopathic medicines and psychologists. Sometimes, the extensive use of slang made my Asian mind uneasy while reading.
This book provides an amazing reading experience with its professional editing and lack of remarkable errors. The book deserves a rating of 5 out of 5 stars because of its captivating effect on the readers. I like to recommend this memoir to all readers seeking a positive push towards their dreams.
