“Faults” by Orion Gregory is a suspense crime thriller novel that narrates the one-week life-threatening experience of a tennis player named Sydney Livingstone and how she overcame that hazardous situation. The story revolves around Sydney, who came to play a tennis match in the Mainspring Mutual Open (MMO) tournament in Columbus, primarily to overcome her financial crisis, even after receiving a threatening message from a random guy through the internet to withdraw her participation in that tournament. At first, she didn’t consider the seriousness of the trap that twirled around her in the tournament until the suspect made an attempt to kill her. But after knowing that, how she overcame that vulnerability, who was the culprit, and what was the result of the tournament are the main streams of the novel.
The character portrayal of every person by the author is admirable. The vivid writing style made me feel everything that Sydney was feeling. It took me on a journey with people who were at MMO tournaments for that whole week and made my heart bounce each time the tennis ball bounced on the court. The way Sydney carried over the threats through her sense of humor is amusing. The author handled the relationship between Sydney, Enzo Martin, her friends, and her family in a soothing manner that is pleasant and uplifting. While coming across the conversations between Sydney and her father Michael, the readers can feel what they both were going through because of each other’s departure from their relationship.
The spirit that enriched Syd's position during each match was mind-blowing. The roles of Peter, Victor Dan, Chelsea, Romero, Fitzgerald, and other main and side characters left their foot prints on the sand of “Faults” heavily. The friendship that exists between Milena and Syd and, on the other hand, between Syd, Anja, and Nicole is remarkable. The personality of the coach, Russo, and his knowledge regarding each player were awesome. Apart from these characters, another two characters that stole my attention are detective Gil Trent and his assistant Christopher Samuels. The style of their investigations and finding of the real culprit were outstanding.
The beloved part of the author’s writing is the method that he used by sprinkling the portrayal of suspects on every character that came into the story. The narrative is propelled forward by thrills and twists that keep readers guessing about the suspect until the very end. In the part where the suspect was revealed, the twist was unexpected for the readers.
Overall, I couldn’t find any negatives in this novel. Among some suspense crime thriller novels that I have read before, I admit that “Faults” is the best ever story that kept me on the edge of my seat in many aspects. The flow of the story made me read further without leaving any interval in order to know what happened next. While reading, my heart was expecting the arrival of the climax to know who the suspect was, but when the reading and the last page came to an end, I felt heavy-hearted because there would be no more pending pages waiting and twists to be read relating to this novel. In my opinion, this feeling among readers can be considered a great success for the story rather than any other award.
Only a few books will compel us to prioritize them over other important works in our daily lives due to their themes. “Faults” is one of the books that falls into this category. This book can be highly recommended for filmmaking, which may guarantee a box-office hit. Apart from these, I found only two errors, which shows that the book was professionally edited.
Based on the above comments, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. In conclusion, the novel “Faults” is the best gem that I have found among many suspense crime thriller stories where I wouldn’t be able to find any faults at all. This book is highly recommended for all people who love suspense while reading. Fans of crime thrillers will find much to enjoy in this clutching novel.
