First Survivor by Mark Unger is the heartwarming and heartbreaking story of the battle the entire Unger family faced when young Louis was diagnosed with neuroblastoma cancer. After just a few chapters, I didn’t want to put this book down. Louis Unger's bravery and his family’s dedication are astonishing. I would give this book a 5 out of 5 star rating. Louis’s story fills you with emotions from the start. Hearing the story from the dad’s perspective helps you see what the entire family went through and shows the dedication and bond this family shares. Mark Unger did a great job telling you a lot about the specific procedures young Louis went through while keeping it easy to understand and interesting. He even includes a glossary at the end to help with any confusing terms. I wish no one had to go through what Louis and his family did, but this book gives hope to those in similar situations. It showcases the bravery of Louis, family bonds, unending dedication, and many amazing doctors doing unthinkably hard jobs along the way. I only have a couple of suggestions for this book. My first suggestion would be to include a chapter on how this journey financially affected the family. This area was touched on, but I wish more details would have been given. My only other suggestion would be to include a chapter written from the mother's perspective. We see quotes from her throughout the book, but I'm sure she has even more to tell. Overall, I would thoroughly recommend this book. I believe anyone teen and older who is facing a medical trial in their life or wants to read an inspiring story would enjoy this book. I learned so much and will never look at childhood cancer the same way.
