Marrying a Playboy Billionaire by H M Irwing is a contemporary romance. Aria is a young business woman who meets again a millionaire Justin Key, with whom she had a one-night stand five years ago, after her fiancé left her for her more beautiful cousin. Justin's father died and according to his will Justin has to marry before he turns 30 or he will lose his father's wealth. Plot of the story is nothing special or new, but things become interesting as the story unfolds.
What I liked most in this love story is the quality of the narration. As far as the so-called-light literature- is concerned, the author did not insult the intelligence of the reader with superficial and unintelligent dialogues. The development of closeness and love between Aria and Justin is gradual. Their relationship begins with sexual attraction, which is the case at the beginning of many real life love stories, but gradually turns into emotional closeness. They are sharing mutual fears, supporting each other in overcoming personal insecurities and gradually it leads to mature love. This process was not easy and simple, especially since both of them were rather temperamental and stubborn, but eventually they succeeded in doing so despite everything. The writer faithfully described the reconciliation of two powerful personalities into one love rhapsody.
I especially liked the story about their families. Usually romantic stories are shown as if they occur in a social vacuum. This is not the case with the Marrying -a-Playboy-Millionaire romance. Aria's mother is so well psychologically portrayed as a critical mother that I occasionally had the need to advise her on the consequences of such parenting style (and consequences were Arias insecurities about her beauty and lovability). Her family reminded me of movie My Big Greek Orthodox wedding. Aria family is full of love, but her parents and sister and brother do not have clue about clear psychological boundaries, which leads to so many funny situations. I really enjoyed reading about it.
For me, one of the biggest surprises in this novel is language. I am vivid reader of all kind of romances and I can say with an authority that it is not usual for this kind of books to have advanced English language vocabulary. In this book I had to look for the meaning of some words. With help of Almighty Google translation I had an opportunity to expand my own vocabulary. For example, did you know that a definition of recalcitrant is -having an obstinately uncooperative attitude toward authority or discipline? Or that word flounce is the synonym for ruffle (Note: English is not my mother tongue, because I am Serbian living in Serbia, although I read English language without problems...) On the other hand what I did not like concerning language is excessive use of swearing... I had not been counting (because it would have been a meaningless waste of time and energy), but if it was not used over 200 times I believe it's not once. In my opinion it is completely unnecessary. Not only is it unnecessary but not in harmony with the hero's origins. They both come from well-educated families and he is a millionaire. I did not meet any person from that social background who swears so much. It is more congruent with high school dropout, or from drug lords in big city ghettos.
Marrying a Playboy Billionaire by H M Irwing is great read for summer. If possible, under umbrella on the seashore or by ocean, even by the swimming pool. I would also recommend an experiment for you. Try reading it while listening the appropriate music. In my opinion Eve Cassidy's melancholy voice gives the perfect background for this love story, but if you're a fan of classical music, try Claude Debussy's Clair de Lune. It is worth trying, at least.
That's why Escape deserves, in my opinion, 3 out of 4 stars. Some typo errors but not too much. And very important recommendation: not for readers under 16 years old.
