I rate this book 1 out of 4 Stars
When you see the jacket of this book, like most people you wold assume it’s a Mills and Boon/Silhouette type thing. You would be both wrong and right. It tries very hard at being a romance with some action thrown in and a lot of politics. It’s boring and too detailed about the things you don’t want to care about in what should be an easy read. The details read like something out of a Wikipedia page. The sex is great if you are a teenager or the severely repressed type.
Theirs is an attempt at a plot but the writer gives up and just writes “stuff” in hasty exposition. This is the sort of drivel that makes world peace seem like a distant distant dream. I bring that up because the author does, frequently. Right from the dedication it is clear that this was going to be an uphill trudge of ideological thought that hasn’t been fully thought through. There’s so much pontification in the first few chapters I gave up sighing. This book is definitely not helping in the pursuit of world peace.
Then the attempt at sex without really going deep into the hypocrisy of all of the scenarios in which it takes place is breath taking. I mean come on! That deserved more exposition. I would have preferred that exposition rather than the tedious descriptions of nuclear facilities. Oh, there also many many descriptions of buildings.
There’s not a single likable character. They are all stupid and self-absorbed to the point of stupidity. This is in spite of all their accomplishments intellectually and in the case of the male lead; "badass-ness". If you like Bourne Identity but wished there was less story and more casual dropping of the word “cock” in sex scenes, you will like this. Have you ever read a book so terrible that you stuck with it to see where it would end? And even then, it exceeded your low expectations?
Well, buckle up, this book has one dimensional characters disguised as complex characters. I was almost sure it was satire. The clunky and heavy handed technical information however made me realise that it was actually trying to be serious. You have not known the inside of a nuclear facility until you have read this book!
My takeaway, if you have time to pass, this is just the thing for you. Take it to a party you didn’t want to go to in the first place and sit a corner. It will make you laugh. It made me laugh. Oh, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, the chapters get wonderfully shorter as you go along so it gets less burdensome. The first few chapters are full of facts I am sure were lifted off google and then it goes into not bothering.
If you have time and light, read this. If you have better things to do, do them
