The right to nominate by Thomas Peterson highlights adverse effects of organized party system on any republic as he focus on American republic and the ways he has suggested that will restore the right to nominate to people.
The framers of the constitution having known the history of how parties and party leaders has pulled apart and destroyed republics, they convened at Philadelphia convention of 1787 and came up with five anti- party clauses that will reduce the effect of organized parties on the republic. Clause #1, the framers designed the constution to have House of Representatives that would be elected every two years as a security measure against the influence of parties and factions. Clause #2, the framers designed the presidential veto that allows the executive to be independent of other branches of the government upon executing their mandate. Clause #3, the framers divided the government to judiciary with an aim that parties will not poison the justice system. Clause #4, the framers divided the Congress into House of Representatives and the senate and separated powers of impeachment between them by assigning one body to be the accusers and the other to be the judge.Clause #5, the framers designed the constitution so that the senate would be selected by state legislators. All the clauses were generated so that the parties should not dominate the people hence divide and manipulate them.

The founders, however who had fought the war of independence and who were also present at Philadelphia conference dismissed the framers design as a set of earlier ideas. They divided America into party systems. The writer focuses on Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson who were the treasury secretary and secretary of the state respectively who worked in George Washington government. The rivalry between the two led to formation of parties that almost ruined the new republic of America. Thomas Jefferson together with James Madison formed Democratic Republican Party and Alexander Hamilton with other federalists formed Federal Party. The two founders of party systems concentrated on slandering and accusing one another instead of serving the people of America. Americans were forced to take sides by either being on the side of Jefferson or on the side of Hamilton. While party disions took place, the party leaders were able to sell their agendas at the expense of giving service to American people. The party system controlled the government and as a result there was corruption, misappropriation of funds, and manipulation of the American people. Due to this adverse effects of the party system, the writer suggested that the original framers constitution should be restored and the right to nominate should be exercised by people and not by parties.

As suggested by the writer the right to nominate should be exercised by people, first by having an independent anti- party board that is appointed by the states and this nominating body will have two elements, the jury and convention that should be selected randomly by law of probabilities so that it would not have party influence. The appointed jury/ convention should then engage registered voters in states by having them filling and signing a questionnaire regarding the candidate they would want to hold the public office as their representative. The jury' s requirement of the candidate is that, they should be able to perform, they should be well known and respected in the society, someone that is honest and respected. The candidate should neither be a sports person or an entertainer. The jury/ convention should then nominate the person that is chosen by many people and have the person running for elections so as to be elected by people for the public office and by following this procedure, people will be exercising their right to nominate a candidate of their own choice and not the one imposed on them by the parties.

What I like the most about this book is, how the writer is determined in having the right to nominate transferred from parties to the people so as to restore the framers original design of the constitution, so that the government can be of the people, by the people and of the people. At this point American people will be at liberty to nominate the person of their choice to hold public office and not someone that would be imposed to them by parties. People will then control the government through their representatives. Therefore I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I would not give the book a rating of 2 out of 4 because the author is consistent with the theme of the book and is determined in having the original constitution designed by framers restored so that it can work effectively for American people. I would not give the book a rating of 4 out of 4 because the book is not simple enough to be understood by all the people who would want to read so that they understand party politics. Therefore the author should make it simple so that to increase the target group of readers

The book would appeal the most to all the people in any given republic that has been divided and people manipulated because of party system. The book would also appeal to those studying the history of American party systems. The book would appeal the least to teenagers who are rather interested in reading adventurous books.
