I selected From Drift To Shift - How Change Can Bring True Meaning and Happiness To Your Work and Life to review.

The book is by Jody Miller - author who went through a tough divorce of her own to experience the shift. It is an interesting compilation of essays. Although they are compiled under the umbrella of how shift happens in life and that we should be open to change and remain positive despite the challenges. Although the topic is self-explanatory, I was not clear on some of the essays. They are very loosely connected to each other. The thoughts seem like random short stanza’s, fragmented, incoherent and widely dispersed.

Some of the essays like about Serita, Emilee, Andy and Darren talk about physical challenges and the ability of these individuals to stand against adversity to face the challenges head on. These essays are much more easily understood and applicable to what Jody is trying to convey in terms of shifting of the mindset to not only accept what you are dealt with positively, but also to move on and be exemplary for others.

The particular essays that stuck with me are Serita going through abandonment to create iFoster, Emilee teaching pilates despite having multiple surgeries after two cancer episodes, Andy experiencing a near death experience to establish himself asa philanthropist and Darren facing near death experience to come out strong as an artist and person who forgive his friend.

Although I liked the Takeaways at the end of the chapter - they were again random mind burps...nothing earth shattering or philosophically strong. These one-lines lacked the strength to create an impression. They seemed rather childish recap of the content of the chapter. The aim of such book should be to entrench some philosophical stories or one-liners in the mind of the readers. This book completely missed the mark on that front.

Some essays pertaining to Achuar tribe, Sloan, Jerry and Manoj lack the connective tissue and power to convey the message. They seem to be random gap filling sections in the book with no connection to the previous chapter.

I believe Jody went for a longer book. Quality always trumps quantity - but that is lost in this book. Jody could have conveyed the message more succinctly by leaving some essays out and just focusing on the ones that relate to physical challenges and near death experiences.

I would rate this as an average book as 2 out of 4 and probably may not even recommend it. This book did not make an impression. If I do end up talking about this book to friends and family then I will recommend only portions of the book.
