Veterans Day by J.J.Jorgens is one of the detective based novels in which Mary Jane Morris is a private detective. She is an ex-cop who practices her trade in Washington D.C. The author mentions in the Foreword that she has invented a detective based on her liking of various detective novels she read while growing up. So, Mary Jane Morris is a woman detective, smarter and more resourceful than other male counterparts. She is a very confident, level-headed person and has an independent view of her own in everything. Washington D.C. being a place where all kind of underhanded deals and underground activities take place, Detective Mary Jane Morris has her time filled up with her work.

On a Halloween evening, Mary Jane receives a message from her friend and her former detective partner, David McHale, calling for her help. She manages to reach his office after a bit of difficulty and a small adventure, but it was too late. He was found dead in his office shot by his own gun. She does a little investigation of her own and finds a message for her. The police treat the case as suicide. However, Mary Jane finds through the message left for her that David was investigating Mayor and businessman and had clicked few photos of them and was blackmailing them.

Following the lead, she starts her investigations and learns that it was a big scam involving lot of top personalities, a builder, a politician among others, all multimillionaires. Their plan was to systematically loot War Veterans Administration. They had planned to disrupt the veteran’s data, wipe out the records of subsidies for war veteran’s healthcare, rehabilitation and work. Which means, they substituted them with fake papers and with sole purpose of diverting funds received through government, manipulating government contracts and other donations received for war veteran’s welfare.

Mary Jane is helped in her investigation by her few close ordinary personalities like a wounded vet, her roommate who is a newspaper reporter, her boyfriend, the local computer wizard and to a certain extend also by the cop at police station who was her ex-colleague. She goes on a few adventures, almost risking her life while pursuing the suspects . The persons she is against are all moneyed and with no morals. Then, at a time, it looks like the suspects have an upper hand and she too will become victim like David. This scenario is the beginning paragraph of the novel.

The ending is nicely wrapped up, the culprits caught and booked, one or two escape and the whole scam is exposed. However, the narration also includes some leisure time when nothing progresses story wise, except for mundane things in Mary Jane’s life. This somehow drags the story line and for those looking for a fast and gripping detective novel will be disappointed. Also, some adventures that Mary Jane goes through is unbelievable but it makes her look like a smart, alert, all abilities and capabilities woman just like a superlative detective. Overall, I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars for the above reasons and recommend for those who like leisure reading.
