Hello, My Love, by Evy Journey, is a type of Other Fiction leaning more towards a romance with a subtle hint of mystery. Modern and real world issues are brought to the forefront in this book of trusting and growing together. These characters face and react in a very human way, to the world around them; which many may find refreshing from the overly exaggerated characters that tend to be glamorized in our time.
After inheriting the family business; when his father passes away, Greg wants to do good to those he now employs and in doing so he consults Dr. Halverson. This is where Elise and Greg first meet; he likes her at first sight, her...not so much. Elise is a career driven women with no time for men; especially the playboy business man that seems to be invading her life. Focusing on her job at the Legal Aid Society, Elise sees this playboy as someone who is just out for himself. As time passes though, she thinks that there might be good in him.
After a year of getting to know each other and becoming good friends, what's one more party? What's a drive home and a drink between friends? The next morning Greg calls off his wedding, that was set for the next day; and Elise just tries to live her life. The consequences that come from their night together seem to never end, and a vindictive former fiancée doesn't want to let things go. Two years pass with Elise and Greg reuniting but even more surprises and dangers arise, besides just living with each other.
I personally really liked that this author attempts to take on some very serious subjects and issues that we; as a society, have today. I wish I could go into more detail about one of those particular subjects, but "spoilers". One of the other major subjects I feel fine talking about though, is the fact of morality. Now, I have my own views and opinions, but I think the author kept in mind the different people reading the story. Keeping a balance of understanding is a key factor; and I like that the author tried to do so. I also liked the viewpoints she gave of both the main characters, as well as Elise's parents. The different perspectives gave a better understanding and feeling of how people might react in varying points in their lives.
I do have a few things that I didn't particularly care for and I feel they outweigh or distract from the good of the book. This story was supposed to be inspired by Jane Austin; and where I can see the author did try to keep that element in mind, it just didn't quite flow right. Some of the biggest issues was the authors timing. No indication was giving when hours, weeks or even a few years past; it just kept on going. I had to go back and read things over again just to make sure I didn't misread or miss anything. The book only had a few spelling errors; one was so confusing and out of place I wasn't sure what the author was trying to do. It had "What're" which is not a word; but the characters do not have any accent distinctions, which made it feel out of place.
Overall, I rate Hello, My Love, by Evy Journey, 2 out of 4 stars. With timing and jumping issues, it made it very difficult to get into the true spirit of the story. While I did enjoy some of the growing points; the lack of flow was hard to get past. I think this book has some aspects that will draw readers in who like modern romance with that hint of mystery; and if the timing/flow were fixed it would be a good read.
