"Are You Love Smart or Love Stupid" by Dr Rachel Sims is a compelling dive into the complexities of modern relationships, particularly examining the influence of social media and dating apps. Sims skillfully navigates the reader through the pitfalls of comparing our love lives to the curated images we see online, urging us to reevaluate our approach to love and relationships.

One of the book's strengths lies in its ability to debunk common myths surrounding love and marriage. Through relatable stories and characters, Sims effectively illustrates how unrealistic expectations can lead to dissatisfaction in relationships. As a professional licensed counsellor, her insights are grounded in both research findings and real-life experiences, adding a layer of credibility to her narrative.
Sims doesn't just point out the flaws in our thinking; she also offers practical advice on how to navigate the challenges of modern relationships. She emphasises the importance of simple gestures, like being present for our partners, over grand but unattainable displays of affection. Her approach is refreshing and reminds readers of the essence of true connection in a world often distracted by superficialities.
While reading the book, I was surprised by how much myth I was fostering about love and relationships that was shattered by this book and shattered for good. There was a particular chapter, or rather myth, about how people show their picture-perfect lives on social media and their perfect relationship with the caption #blessed. I laughed hysterically when I remembered how many online couples I idolise who do the same, and it always makes me feel bad about how perfect their relationship is and not mine.
The book's brevity, at about 134 pages, is a strength, as it packs a wealth of wisdom into a concise format. The inclusion of checklists and a myth index at the end of the book is a helpful summary of the key points covered. Additionally, the editing is impeccable, with no noticeable typos and Sims' writing style is engaging and feels like a heart-to-heart conversation with a friend.

"Are You Love Smart or Love Stupid" is a gem of a book that offers valuable insights for anyone navigating the complexities of modern relationships. It's a must-read for both those in love and those seeking love, providing a fresh perspective on what it means to truly connect with another person. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
