Well written, captivating and enticing. My trip to Adele is the story of three characters whose focus is attending an Adele concert in Verona. Their motivation for going to the concert is varied but each person’s life is leading towards this one night and we are witnesses along for the ride.

Elias is a young man yearning for his long lost love Malika, constantly drawn to his native land Morocco where he comes to believe that black magic is the cause of their separation.

Nadia a divorced mother living in Jordan challenges social and cultural norms in her conservative community by forging her own path through life. She is determined to take her young son to see his idol Adele to expose him to the wider world and to prove to herself that she is the emancipated, independent woman she is trying to become.

Yaser, a married man living in Los Vegas, is trying to find some kind of meaning in his loveless marriage and empty existence. He envies his single friend and dreams of a colourful, exciting life free of the stifling presence of his wife who is pious and conservative.

The authors paint pictures of the geographic locations in which their characters are placed resulting in an animated and engaging read. One almost feels like a confidante for the characters as they overcome obstacles to reach their goal.

Each chapter in My Trip to Adele is linked to an Adele song with the lyrics appropriately reflecting the obstacles and emotions the characters are dealing with. Adele’s lyrics are inspired by her personal experiences in life – both good and bad. They read like poetry and inspire each character in different ways.

The quest to attend Adele’s Verona concert comes to represent unspoken desires for each character and they sweep us along with them as they manoeuvre, plot and plan to reach their goal. In the process there is a growing awareness of how rich the tapestry of each individual’s unique existence is. Everyone has their own struggles to overcome shaped by family, society, religion, customs and norms. We are surrounded by people in the throes of personal dramas of which we are unaware and this knowledge should encourage empathy and generosity of spirit towards one’s fellow man.

The seemingly mundane contexts illustrate how much humanity has in common united by shared goals, aspirations and struggles. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars as it was inspiring, stimulating and captivating. It would appeal to readers both old and young from varied backgrounds as everyone sets objectives for themselves just as the Yaser, Nadia and Elias did. The surprising twists and turns each characters journey takes shows that the perfect ‘Hollywood’ ending we all dream of isn’t always the final result yet, by the end of the book, the realization dawns that life unfolds as it should and all we can do is to go with the flow. Life is ultimately magical despite us and not because of us.
