“A Kingdom Forgotten”, written by Charles W. McDonald Jr., is a Sci-Fi/Fantasy novel. This is a book fit for those who are bored and want to try a new reading style. This book is unique. Through multiple storylines, the reader is dragged in more than one universe and discover a non-conventional kind of history based on science, technology, engineering, occult practices and religion practices.
The story takes place in a world and in a time far more advanced than our own where magic and technology have met. In order to counter the consequences brought into existence by him making A Throne of Souls, an outlaw wizard, describe as “Unique. Dangerous. Ruthless. God-like.”, must accumulate power that far exceeds imagination. Through hope and hate, through the decades and centuries, the execution of this outlaw wizard Master Plan evolves with the understanding of his soul.
The reader will discover a plethora of characters, among which Damon, the outlaw wizard, Radin and Talemar. Damon, an evil character, is a smart and troubled person which enjoys his powers that are seemingly endless. His tale takes part in different worlds and different times. Radin, convinced to be “The One” announced by the prophecies, gathers friends from different worlds in order to fulfill his role. Talemar, a magician, is also convinced to be “The One” which led to a conflict with Radin. Those are just a few characters that are introduced in this story.
Through knighthood, magic, technology and corruption, “A Kingdom Forgotten” shows you a touching and complex story. Due to the time jumps from place to place and from character to character, the first chapters of the book might be a little confusing, but once you get used to it, you will really start enjoying the experience. The time jumps that many might find annoying in the beginning will slowly turn out charming and indispensable. Unpredictable and not wearisome, “A Kingdom Forgotten” has everything a book needs to be re-read many times without getting tired of it.
I gave this book 3 out of 4 stars because, even though it was very interesting and beautifully written, it was a bit troublesome to keep reading the book due to the complexity of the story. I would have preferred for the first chapters to be less complex and to add complexity as the book developed. To tell you the truth, until now, I don’t know if the author is a genius rarely seen or totally insane.
