Review of Shadows
‘Shadows’ by William Stephen Edwards is a remarkable collection of poems that delves into the depths of human emotions, capturing the essence of love, grief, hope, loss, and war from a veteran’s perspective. Whether you are seeking a poem to learn by heart or simply to immerse yourself in, this collection offers a profound and thought-provoking experience.
Stephen's remarkable collection of poems beautifully articulates his thoughts and emotions regarding love. He goes into great detail to celebrate love in ‘Quasimodo', which is very nostalgic, and more profoundly in ‘Prometheus’ and the feeling of loss that comes from losing a loved one in' Leaves of Grape’. Throughout the book, Stephen openly explores love and all its aspects without hesitation. His poems vividly capture the excitement and tenderness of love, evoking powerful images of passion and devotion. Each verse resonates with authenticity, allowing us to connect with the profound emotions that love can bring.
Stephen's poems eloquently capture the emotional toll of war on humanity. Through raw and powerful imagery, Stephen vividly portrays the horrors and sacrifices experienced by individuals in battle. Through his powerful imagery, Stephen takes us to the front lines, allowing us to feel the anguish and witness the devastating consequences of war. We see survivors’ guilt in the soldiers that survive, the pain of losing one’s comrades, trying to heal one’s mental wounds after the war, and honoring the memories of the fallen heroes. Stephen delves deeply into this topic to provide a comprehensive lesson about it.
In his collection, Stephen skillfully delves into the theme of loss and its associated pain. His poems navigate the intricate emotions of grief, offering comfort and insight to individuals facing profound loss. With sensitivity and empathy, he captures the essence of mourning, allowing us to find solace in the shared experience of grief. In his poem ‘That Day’, the persona embodies overwhelming anguish in response to the loss of a loved one, while in ‘Abhorrent Dawn’, the persona grapples with despair caused by the frustration of not being able to communicate a gnawing message.
Stephen's use of humor feels like a heartfelt outpouring of thoughts, making the poems both captivating and humorous. I particularly admire the gibberish poem 'Gibberish; ' it was a pleasant surprise, and I loved it. The poem is unique and helps lighten the mood about the topics discussed in the book. This showcases Stephen's true creativity and boldness.
Stephen's poetic genius shines in every line, leaving a lasting impact on me. This collection is a must-read for those seeking solace, inspiration, or a deeper understanding of the human condition. The lyrical language throughout the collection made it a delightful read. I wholeheartedly recommend it to all poetry enthusiasts, giving it a perfect 5 out of 5 for its exceptional craftsmanship, originality, and meticulous editing. This exceptional masterpiece left me filled with profound admiration and deep appreciation. I have no reservations or criticisms about it; I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of it.
