Anyone who has ever even attempted to be a bit health conscious will know that there are millions of websites out there that spread false information and myths about what is good for you and what isn’t. Constant fact and source checking can become boring and time consuming. In this big cloud of exaggerated truths and straight up misinformation, Dr Tavel’s book, Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks is like a breath of fresh air.
Dr Tavel exposes the most common lies you have surely heard at some point in your life. Backing up his answers with solid research, the reader may rest assured the information in this book was compiled from legitimate sources. This book examines a very wide variety of topics.
First, it has tips on ways to be healthy that you can bring into your daily life. This includes tips on weight loss, what to eat for breakfast, how to cut sodium out of your diet, and just about everything in between. Then, it has a section dedicated to myths, and debunking the rumors floating around the health community. This includes chapters on bottled water, air travel, probiotics, and much more. Lastly, it shows you the tricks companies use to sell you products you often don't need. It shows you how to spot a scam, which products are actually useless, and basically just how companies use false advertising to sell you “snake oil”.
Reading this book will leave you more educated on the world around you. Next time you're at the store you can know for sure which vitamin or mineral supplements you need, next time you or a friend catches a cold you will know what can help and what will only make it worse. This book holds a lot of useful advice on a huge variety of topics. There is definitely something in there for everyone.
Overall, I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. Whether you read this book cover to cover or skip around to random chapters, everyone who reads it ends up smarter about the world around them than before. The writing style makes it easy to understand, so you don't have to be a doctor like Mr Tavel to benefit from this reading. I enjoyed every step of the book and the constant flow of interesting facts made the book hard to put down. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone.
