Review of E M P Honeymoon

E M P Honeymoon: Kelly and Tom by Dorothy May Mercer focuses on CCPD Sgt. Tom Turbulo and his bride, Kelly, during their honeymoon at a picturesque island resort in Honduras. What begins as a romantic getaway quickly escalates into perilous involvement in a terrorist scheme targeting the United States.
While browsing a charming gift shop during their honeymoon, Kelly stumbles upon a hidden, high-tech computer lab. Her curiosity turns dangerous when she is attacked inside the lab, barely managing to escape. Alarmed by Kelly’s ordeal, Tom accompanies her back to the site to investigate further. In an alley behind the shop, he discovers a large, locked shipping container. The couple is thrust into a complex conspiracy involving a terrorist group. Joining forces with CIA Special Agent Steve Spalding and two female bodyguards, Sharon and Agatha, the couple risks their lives to uncover the contents of the container, the secrets held within the lab’s computers, and the nature of the imminent threat against the United States.
Although classified under the romance genre, the book leans heavily towards being a high-octane action thriller. The honeymoon setting quickly becomes secondary as Tom and Kelly delve deeper into unraveling the terrorist plot. Dorothy May Mercer expertly crafts a range of characters, each distinctly defined, enhancing the story’s intensity and excitement. Readers are drawn into a gripping narrative filled with suspense and action. However, the title might suggest more romance than the plot delivers.
Mercer skillfully infuses humor into the storyline, providing moments of levity amidst the tension. A standout aspect of the book is the evolving relationship between Sharon and Steve, which transitions from initial distrust and hostility to mutual respect and affection. Conversely, the character of Rhee Su-Jin, the terrorist leader, felt misaligned with her role. Despite her intellect and leadership, her portrayal as timid and nervous while undercover as a tourist seemed inconsistent.
The book is well edited, as I could not find any errors. The narrative flows seamlessly from one chapter to the next, making for an engaging read. With no explicit scenes and minimal profanity, this book is suitable for older teens and senior adults.
Without hesitation, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. It’s a compelling read for anyone who enjoys fast-paced action and intrigue, interspersed with a touch of romance and humor. I found nothing to dislike. The initial pace was slow. I highly recommend it to fans of thrilling, edge-of-the-seat novels.
