This is my review of Raven's Peak by Lincoln Cole. This is an engaging paranormal story that starts slow but picks up speed until its open ended conclusion. The story follows two people as they try to save the backwoods town of Raven's Peak from destruction by the actions of powerful demons.
The story starts by showing us the sacrifice that saves Abigail Dressler from the demon that had killed her team mates and possessed her to kidnap young girls so it could stay on our plane of existence. We are then taken to a few months later and meet Haatim Arison in Arizona. He had moved back to the States after the untimely death by cancer of his younger sister. Now he is trying to figure out how to deal with this tragic loss which also causes him to lose faith in God. Abigail crosses paths with Haatim while working on a case.
Abigail saves Haatim from a fate worse than death a couple of times. Reluctantly she takes him with her on a job to check out Raven's Peak. When they get there they find a tiny town that does not have much going for it. One of it's biggest attractions is a small campground outside of town, near the edge of the ruins of the old location of the town. This town is usually suspicious and angry about “outsiders” coming to visit the campground and judging their way of life. While here Abigail learns of the possible fate of her mentor and father figure. Haatim learns more about the secret life of his father and the choices his father is willing to make to keep the masses safe from demons and their actions. Haatim also finds out more about himself and what he is willing to fight for and what he believes.
This book is broken up into two parts. The first part introduces us to Haatim, and Abigail and how they meet and start their journey. The second part takes us to Raven Peak and the issues that develop there. This is also a story about demons trying to take over human bodies and follow their own private agendas. The method that the demons use to reach our plane of existence is unclear. What is clear is
The author has a unique voice and pace of story telling. It is engaging if a bit slow to start and get to the main action that we are being led to. Abigail and Haatim have the beginnings of solid characters and live in a world similar to ours except that supernatural forces have the ability to affect us. The author is very careful about what he tells the reader and keeps mysteries going throughout the whole book. The information given, seems to be given sparingly, leaving the reader guessing at times as to the actual motives that drive these people.
I would have liked to see a little bit more background information to help understand this world a little bit better but as I read I understood that Haatim was the major guide to this new world. It is mostly through his eye that we see the experiences that cause much of his world to change. We do see through Abigail a little bit but not as much information is shared with the reader. I enjoyed reading this book and give it 3 out of 4 stars.
