Review of Multi-Billion-Dollar Pet Food Fraud
"Multi-Billion-Dollar Pet Food Fraud" by Dr. Tom Lonsdale is still a very sensitive issue in the world of pet nutrition. This is not a scholarly work in any way about the health of our dogs and cats; it is an impassioned call to arms against the mass pet food manufacturers. Lonsdale, a veterinarian who supports raw meat-based diets, categorically claims that kibble is not only nutritionally devoid but also a deliberate but poorly concealed effort to make money at the expense of our beloved animals.
These tactics work hand in hand with the ethos that Lonsdale adopts as he stands alone against the might of the pet food giants. This frame of reference has appealed to those consumers who oppose large conglomerate corporations and who prefer going back to nature when taking care of their pets. Unique to Lonsdale, it combines scientific facts with real-life success stories of people who saw improvements in the health of their beloved pets when they fed them raw food. These personal stories create a realistic context for what may be complex scientific discourses. Lonsdale is not just criticizing the pet food manufacturers; he is providing the readers with means how to transform their pets to raw food diets.
However, though the book promotes raw food feeding, it may not be a suitable diet for most pet owners. Prohibitiveness of fresh foods, issues with regard to the preparation of raw meat, and modification of nutrient composition in meals if they are not done properly are issues left unattended. Considering that Lonsdale is a social justice advocate, the book could be viewed as one that speaks to the converted. The correlation presented can benefit from a more detailed argument, which would acknowledge the progress that was made by some of the pet food producers and acknowledge the use of better-quality ingredients.
I will give “Multi-Billion-Dollar Pet Food Fraud” 5 out of 5 stars because it will for sure create a lot of controversy among pet owners. While the potential bias and limitations in scope might raise eyebrows, the book serves a valuable purpose: engaging with important questions concerning pet nutrition and the control that pet owners possess concerning the industry. There is nothing that I can say that I disliked or criticized since they did such a good job with the editing.
“Multi-Billion-Dollar Pet Food Fraud” may not be the definitive answer to pet nutrition, but it’s a title that will grab the readers’ attention for sure. It helps to educate readers about the proper care and feeding of pets and motivates people to explore the topic of pet food on their own based on the needs of their pet and their personal conscience. Therefore, the book finally gets us back to the basics and tells us that what we feed our pets is love and that a little knowledge goes a long way in making sure our pets are healthy, happy creatures.
