[Following is a volunteer review of "Soul Seeker" by Kaylin McFarren.]
"Soul Seeker" by Kaylin McFarren is a fantasy novel that intertwines the lives of humans and celestial beings, focusing on themes of redemption, supernatural warfare, and destiny. The story begins with Benjamin Poe, a former firefighter imprisoned for the murder of his son, Gabriel. Poe's grim tale unfolds as he reveals to his attorney, Pierce Beaudoin, the true events leading to his incarceration. The narrative delves into Poe's turbulent family life, mysterious supernatural encounters, and the eventual revelation that Poe's fatal shooting of his son was a tragic mistake orchestrated by the demon Crighton. Poe's desperate attempt to escape his dark fate culminates in his suicide, only to find himself in hell, where Crighton awaits to claim his soul.
The second part shifts focus to Crighton's mission to capture an angel's soul under Lucifer's orders. During this mission, Crighton and the angel Ariel form a soul bond, complicating their fates. The pair, along with Crighton's mother, Acadia, embark on a journey to escape Lucifer's grasp. They uncover deep celestial conspiracies, including Crighton's half-angel heritage and the prophecy of a coming war. The narrative escalates as Lucifer is overthrown and Crighton is poised to lead a new order of grand masters. In a dramatic twist, Ariel's soul is saved through a sacrificial act by Lilith, and Poe's soul is redeemed.
My favorite part of "Soul Seeker" is the dramatic climax where Crighton, Ariel, and their allies confront Lucifer in a bid for freedom and justice. The intense battle culminates in Acadia's relentless assault on Lucifer, stabbing him over thirty times with a glowing knife, ultimately leading to his demise. This moment not only showcases the strength and determination of the characters but also marks a significant turning point in their quest. The subsequent escape, the revelation of Crighton's heritage, and the emotional rescue of Ariel all blend together to create a powerful and poignant sequence that epitomizes the themes of sacrifice, love, and redemption that permeate the novel.
I would rate this book five out of five stars for masterfully blending elements of fantasy, supernatural intrigue, and emotional depth, creating a richly layered and engaging storyline. There is nothing I dislike in this book, and the book is perfectly edited.
I recommend this book to fans of fantasy and supernatural thrillers.
