Raven's Peak (World on Fire, #1) by Lincoln Cole
Haatim Arison, a recent theology graduate, finds himself back in Arizona after the death of his younger sister. He returns to his college town because he is struggling with his faith after this loss, and he also feels the need to put some distance between himself and his parents in India. A random meeting with a shady character soon has Haatim playing amateur detective. He agrees to the stranger's proposition because he could use the money and it would be a nice distraction, but he soon realizes he is in way over his head.
Evil is lurking deep in the woods of the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee. There are strange happenings in the town of Raven's Peak and the Council of Chaldea has demon hunter, Abigail Dressler, on the case. With a reluctant Haatim in tow, Abigail is on the mission, but she is also on a personal quest to save her mentor, Reverend Arthur Vangeest. Abigail and Haatim enter the world of darkness where they are forced to battle mysterious, supernatural forces. Abigail has more to worry about than just fighting demons, however. Are there members of the Council who are out to get her? Are there demons lurking who have a personal vendetta? Will she ever see her beloved mentor again?
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The first of this three-part C/T/M/H series will undoubtedly leave you hungry for more. Although horror and the occult are not my go-to genre, I was hooked from page one. The author does a spectacular job of bringing the characters to life. Haatim is engaging as he is wrenched from his rather mundane existence into a series of events that leave him in shock, disbelief, and fear. Abigail will steal your heart with her unrelenting bravery, her demon-fighting skills, and a wicked determination to fight evil for the good of the world. Together, the unlikely couple becomes a force to be reckoned with.
This book has very few errors to distract the reader. I did notice missing punctuation in a couple of places but overall, it is very well written and edited. The plot has several twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the end. Even as the story concludes, there remain many unanswered questions which will pique your curiosity. Will Abigail be punished by the Council? Will Haatim and Abigail remain close? What will become of the relationship between Haatim and his father? Volumes Two and Three of this series will definitely be on my bookshelves.
This author has opened my eyes and my mind to a new experience. I would never have thought I would enjoy reading about demon-fighting, supernatural possessions, and the like, but Cole put me there, in the middle of it, and it was enthralling. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery thriller, even if the occult is not your thing. I feel certain you will be pleasantly surprised.
