Review of The Glorious Beast!
5 out of 5 stars.
Scott L. Chally's "The Glorious Beast!" is a remarkable memoir about the author's difficult but formative years as a child. A narrative that is both conversational and soul-searching, the prose leads us to the Big Idea—a sort of spiritual illumination that came to the author in a flash of insight or a series of visions—and eventually to the "New World Order" of biblical themes and insights. The other side of Scott is also detailed in the book, and it is here where the memoir opens up. The delivery man, the entrepreneur—those dimensions of Scott—serve to anchor his extraordinary journey.
When you start reading Chally's book, you are immediately caught by the intricate way it tells its story. It is a book in which the author's biographical details merge seamlessly with the larger philosophies and "existential" framework that the author has built around his understanding of the central figures and events of his life. But whatever else this book is, it is, above all, a book that is chock full of appearances of an angel named Iscariot. Iscariot is to the events surrounding the author's life what the sheaf of wheat was to Joseph's forebodings; in Chally's book, Iscariot's appearances and pronouncements on what Chally believes are divine nudges and warnings make for much of the book's structure and, I have to say, much of its interest.
This book stands out because it is so profoundly deep and because the author is so daring as to directly challenge and criticize long-held societal beliefs and ideas. Something to understand right off the bat is simply this: when I loosely refer to Chally’s "spiritual and political themes," I am not trying to pretty up an aggressive and decidedly harsh attack on the politics of English-imposed globalism, as some of our current Wow! trendsetters would probably like to present it. Chally is too honest about our shared humanity not to be honest about his many failings as a raw human being, failings he openly and forcefully airs at all the right moments.
Scott L. Chally's "The Glorious Beast!" is an undoubtedly gripping read. Nonetheless, some readers may become drowned in its dense and intricate tapestry of personal experience interwoven with such cosmic themes as spiritual development and political revolution. For instance, the author spends many pages discussing ways in which society must be transformed, using what can seem to the reader like very intricate and involved reasoning. While some may find such discussions downright tedious (my wife is one of them), no one can fairly accuse Chally of not amply justifying his position.
The editing of this book is superb. I didn't find any typos, errors, or grammatical mistakes. overall book is fantastic and book deserves a 5-star rating.
In conclusion, "The Glorious Beast!" is far more than a memoir. It is a bugle call to an intellectual and spiritual awakening, a plea to wake up and have a good, hard look at what we are really about. As Chally tells it, "The Glorious Beast!" was born out of a moment of pure clarity in which he realized the misguided paths his life had taken (sixty years in all) and resolved to endeavor, with all the art and intellect at his command, in straightening things out as best he could.
