Life Before by K.L. Romo takes you on a journey of the past where strong young women fight for their integrity against the harsh life that has been dealt to them. The dark world hidden in plain sight is brought to the surface and young girls turn to strong women as they fight against it.
Elaine Dearborn finds herself tangled in an unimaginable situation. Coming to the realization that she is not hallucinating but is in fact experiencing life as Eliza Darling one-hundred years earlier in 1907. The life of a young woman, with a shared soul, thrust into the dangerous world of prostitution. The fight to end Dallas’s dark world of prostitution becomes Eliza’s life work. Intertwined with Eliza and her crusade, Elaine finds herself increasingly involved in the sex trade that has a grip on young girls lives.
As Eliza fights to leave the world of prostitution, it becomes her mission to pull as many girls out of prostitution as she can. She knows all to well the horrors and violence that live behind the closed doors of prostitutes. It breaks her heart as she watches young girls that feel they have no other way, give over their innocence to the life. When the Virginia K. Johnson Home for women opens it suddenly offers another way for young girls to go, giving them freedom from the life of prostitution. Elaine and Eliza begin a fight like no other to save as many as they possibly can.
Romo weaves an intricate story around a tough subject with a beautiful amount of grace. Her characters have such depth to them you truly care about their lives. The harsh life these young girls were faced with each day is brought to life with each page. Romo does an incredible job of digging deep into this hidden world and showing the true inside view of the horrors these girls faced.
The narrations move between Elaine and Eliza with the majority of it spent on Eliza. I would have enjoyed more from Elaine as her story isn’t touched on as in depth. The tie between women is a creative twist to the story and really adds a beautiful element to the story as a whole. The detail in which Romo writes gives you the feeling that you are right there with the characters.
I found this story to start off a bit slowly but the further into the story I got the more engrossed I became. I fell in love with Romo’s characters and the way they all moved within the story. With explicit sex scenes and violence, that cannot be avoided with such a subject, I would highly recommend this book to anyone over the age of 18. This is a tale of true redemption and bravery, a beautiful example of the strength that lives in each of us. Overall I would rate Life Before 4 out of 4. This is a book that is impossible to put down and will leave you wanting more!
