Are You Love Smart or Love Stupid
Author: Dr Rachel Sims

In this book, Dr Sims has laid down a foolproof plan, with pointers and advice, to achieve a long and happy marriage. It can help a couple on their lifelong road to a committed and loving marriage. The chapters kick off with little scenarios regarding her patients. Her advice is vital and should be a guide for everyone, romantically involved with someone or not. When young and impetuous, love isn't as easy in the long term as it would initially seem; groundwork is involved, such as mutual respect and individuality. In her words: 'Marriage is about two individuals who come together for a common goal, joining their lives, family and friends forever'. So, not to be taken lightly.

Dr Sims leaves no stone unturned in her exploration of love and marriage. From the modern complexities of dating apps to the age-old question of having children, she addresses a wide range of topics. She even delves into the controversial subject of money in relationships. Her approach is practical, suggesting that when seeking a partner, one should list all desired characteristics and prioritise the most important ones.

But, I ask myself, will a couple, joyful in the throws of love, heads in the clouds, bursting with passion, sensibly take a step back to look at their relationship and constructively criticise it? One can only hope that they will.

Her opinions are wise, such as the banality of jealousy and the 'un-love' of abuse: the perpetrator is not jealous and abusive out of love but from insecurity, and the abuse is the flip side of respect.

This book will get five out of five stars from me. It is error-free, well-presented, and beautifully laid out. It would also make a valuable reference book for marriage guidance counsellors and therapists. As a marriage guidance book, I cannot fault it. It's not tedious or verbose, which was refreshing.
