[Following is a volunteer review of "Looking Glass Friends" by E L Neve.]
I give this book 5 out of 5 well-earned, beautiful, poetic stars. Based on the synopsis of the book, I thought it would be like many other romance novels that I have read where you pass some time on a surface romance with possibly some cheating by one or more of the characters. I was very impressed with how the author developed a romance between two people already deeply involved in other relationships without the grittiness of infidelity. The deeper I got into the book, the more intrigued I became with this beautifully written gem. E.L. Neve’s book was surprisingly stunning and truly poetic. On the one side you have Ellie who is content with her life as a wife and mother. On the other side you have Neil who is not content with his life as a husband or even with life in general and is at a crossroads regarding his existence. One innocent gift from Ellie to Neil recalibrates the course of both their lives. The journey that the characters embark upon and the topics they discuss with each other also made me think that this book can be chosen as one that high school or college students could write essays about due to the philosophical and existential questions posed in the book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Ellie and Neil’s story and am going to add E.L. Neve to my list of authors to follow. Even the editing was flawless as I did not notice a single grammatical error or a typo while I was reading. The only negative thing I can say about this book was that I wished it could have been a little longer as I didn’t want the journey to end or maybe even a prologue with an update about their lives a few years into the future just to pacify the readers that all was still well in their lives.
