The events that inspired Laurent Cousineau's The Angel of Death Origins are drawn from his own life experiences. He explains how the trauma he went through led to his struggles with mental health, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and complex post-traumatic stress disorder. In high school, he became passionate about climate change and created a Facebook page and a website called “Climate Change Guide.” While attending the prestigious Voyola High School in Montreal, Laurent was subjected to verbal and physical bullying from both students and teachers. Laurent is taunted for being French, his lack of athletic ability, his slim build, his accent, and various other traits. Despite seeking assistance from the school administrators, the bullying persisted and even intensified. One teacher even conducted a five-minute “roast" of Laurent in front of the entire class.

Laurent describes his work on climate change and the challenges he faced with his online work. In a particular incident, his Facebook account was hacked, leading to a substantial decline in his follower count. He includes several plays that explain his theory of living in a simulation, making people aware of bullying and fighting against misinformation. Laurent’s experiences became the inspiration for writing a popular fantasy novel.

The Angel of Death Origins' unique approach to addressing difficult topics is impressive. Cousineau's creation of “Laurent Casino'' as the main character is intriguing. The mental health issues are explained in great detail. He shows that obsessive-compulsive disorder can affect people differently. He uses a shower ritual to offer a perspective on his intrusive thoughts, actions, and fear of judgment. I could relate to Laurent's long-term effects of constant bullying. I agree that many times the victim is often told it was their fault. My experience in school was almost identical to his, especially when teachers would turn a blind eye to what I was going through.

I don’t think that there is anything to improve about The Angel of Death Origins. The repetition in the book gave an insight into the author’s mentality. The intrusive thoughts exhibit themselves as Cousineau gives vivid detail to several painful events. His explanation of the treatment that assists him in coping is articulated with precision. He reiterates that what works for him may differ from what another person may need.

I rate The Angel of Death Origins five out of five stars. The examples illustrating his theory of living in a simulation make it accessible and easy to grasp. His perspective on "Donald Crump" is open to debate and shows his alignment with liberal political ideology. I am more conservative in my views. However, the author says we should keep an open conversation even if we disagree. Reflecting on his statements, I could counter his facts with my own facts. This was an ingenious way to show that misinformation exists in the media and social networking platforms.

The Angel of Death Origins will appeal to advocates for mental health, bullying awareness, and climate change. Several web links and book references were included for further research. Derogatory terms and some profanity could trigger sensitive readers. Therapists specializing in treating patients with complex post-traumatic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder would find this book beneficial. It lays a solid foundation for global warming and bullying awareness that could be beneficial to parents.
