Review of First Survivor

[Following is a volunteer review of "First Survivor" by Mark Unger.]
First Survivor by Mark Unger is the story of a family facing their hardest challenge, which is their child fighting a life-threatening illness. Mark, the father, in this book, shares the emotional journey as their son, Louis, is diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer called neuroblastoma.
Neuroblastoma is difficult to understand and even harder to accept. Louis had a small chance of survival, which hit Mark and his wife very hard. They are thrown into a new world of medical decisions and affiliated elements they never thought they would need to know. This book shows the fear he feels and the helplessness of watching a child struggle to stay alive. But this story is not just about sadness. Read this amazing book today and get to know how Louis defeats cancer and survives.
I like that this book also shows Mark's journey as a father, discovering his own strength and endurance. The book kept me engaged while slowly revealing what transpired in the family’s life. I feel like the main message in this book is about more than the outcome. It is also about the love of a family, the power of love and belief, and the bravery needed to face challenges.
I also feel that this story is unique. This is because not all families go through similar struggles, and by sharing this, the author gives comfort and inspiration to people in this sort of struggle. This book is very honest and has emotions, but the way these emotions were presented in the book was overwhelming, and I disliked it. Regardless of the fact that I knew from the title that Louis was going to survive, the story had pain, fear, and uncertainty, and they were a lot to handle.
This book was exceptionally edited. It has no errors in it, so I am amazed. This is the reason why I will disregard my dislike and consider other positive aspects of the book and rate it 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend it to anyone who has a family member or someone close going through sickness.
