Review of First Survivor

[Following is a volunteer review of "First Survivor" by Mark Unger.]
First Survivor: The Impossible Childhood Cancer Breakthrough by Mark Unger is a heart-wrenching story of survival. Unger’s young son was diagnosed with Stage Four Neuroblastoma. The horrible diagnosis suddenly changes the lives of this young family as they go through a life-changing journey. Through their journey, they learn to understand the information through notes they take and study. Their son’s zero chance of survival turned into an inspiring story of survival. The book is a raw inside look at the story of this family’s journey.
I would rate this book a 5 out of 5 for the inspirational story. The editing was good throughout the book. Unger did an amazing job of telling his family’s story. He shows the ups and downs throughout the book. It showed that even in the darkest times there could still be hope. Even in the darkest times, there are still ways to continue to carry on and move forward. I would not change a thing about this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who is facing a cancer diagnosis or has a family member facing a cancer diagnosis.
Unger shows that advocating for your family and children is so important. The book shows how being organized and keeping notes or a journal can be so very valuable. Unger’s story is an encouragement to be proactive in your health and to be a proactive advocate when you need to be. Also, research and knowledge are always needed when dealing with the unknown. The support of family and others is also a must-have when dealing with a life-changing disease.
I liked that Unger highlights important medical terms throughout the book. The book had a glossary at the end of the book with these terms. It led me to be able to look up and understand medical procedures and terms better. This will help those who are reading the book for inspiration because they might have just got a cancer diagnosis to be able to look up and know things they will have to deal with. The personal pictures and journal entries only brought the book to life even more. It brings the story to life more.
