Toni is a little boy with superhero powers. However, when he is not saving the world, he likes to do ordinary things like play, read, and help with chores.

Toni the Superhero, written by R.D. Base and illustrated by Debbie Hefke, is an adorable little book for very young readers. This book is not meant for children who can already read. The sentences are intentionally repetitive and very simplistic. Each sentence reads “Toni likes to...” to help little readers who are learning how to read. This is a great process for sound and word recognition. Most words are simple single-syllable words, such as play, read, eat, and more. There are a couple more complicated words, such as "rescue,” but if the book is being used as a tool for learning readers, it will not be challenging for the reader to learn and recognize the longer words.

The illustrations are fantastic! They are not overly stimulating, and the learning child can connect the illustration to the words, making it even easier for them to be successful by the time they read this on their own. There is no unnecessary information in the photos that will guide the child into reading the correct word, even if they have it memorized.

If there is one thing that I would change about this little book, it would be putting the pages in order from easiest to most difficult with words. For example, “Toni likes to eat” is toward the end, but “Toni likes to rescue animals” is one of the first pages. I would make it progressively more difficult rather than a random order. However, this does not change the quality of the book.

I easily give this little book 5 out of 5 stars. It is perfect to help young readers without discouraging them. I found zero errors in the book, making it even better for little tots. I would recommend this book to any parent, grandparent, daycare provider, or even doctor's office.
