Review of Sunrays Among Shadows
In Sunrays Among Shadows, the author narrates a tale full of psychological complexity and psychological understanding. It is a winding journey through the lives of many people, including Jasper and Lily, navigating the murky waters of their past to present so many interconnected events that have shaped life as they know it. An interesting structure, whereby each chapter reads as though it were almost a reflection into the past, slowly peeling away sheets of characters' histories and motivations. It is the manner in which he weaves these personal stories together that gives indicative marks of great storytelling from the author.
The portrayal of the relationship between Jasper and Lily is what I really appreciated in this book. There was tenderness, understanding, and the like in their seeking solace moments from troubled pasts. Tender comfort moments by Jasper toward Lily in her vulnerable times, and vice versa, real concern by Lily for Jasper's well-being, bring out the goodness and likability associated with their bond.
This relationship was almost like a beacon of hope and healing amidst all of the dark elements of the story, which really made it shine on its own in the narrative. Sometimes what a person needs amidst chaos is just a genuine show of concern and goodness. Readers who like character-driven novels with themes of redemption and self-discovery should pick up this book, in my opinion.
It’s hard to spot anything to dislike about this book because there is none. Both the writing and editing were top-notch, and they were also error-free. From the storyline to the characters and plot flow, everything was well done. But as much as I like this book, not every aspect of it suits me. I liked the character Lenore, whose actions and manipulations cast a dark shadow over the storyline that I didn’t like. Her treatment of Jasper, particularly the abuse, is disturbing and difficult to read. The scenes where she inflicts pain and fear upon Jasper, such as the moment she nearly strangled him, were especially disconcerting. But notwithstanding, the book is a great one to read.
I rated this book 5 out of 5 stars because of how H. Dawn Hunter skillfully weaves together a web of interwoven lives with each chapter adding to the main idea of facing one's history and the consequences it has for the present. The author's narrative skills are remarkable, as each chapter delves into the motives and past experiences of the individuals. Notwithstanding these problems the book is still a fantastic read since the author skillfully combines personal tales to form an engaging story.
