[Following is a volunteer review of "The Kovalenko Secret" by Philip L Rettew.]
This book by Phillip L. Rettew is a movie-worthy narrative with interesting characters and great story lines. The Kovalenko Secret revolves around the chaotic and tumultuous events that stem from the conflicted views political extremists have against the American government. The narrative incorporates characters whose lives get intertwined in this unabating conflict. The author interweaves realistic characters, which sparks an entertaining awareness of human nature.
The tale follows the life of a widowed honorable Russian intelligence officer, Colonel Viktor A. Kovalenko, who, upon assuming command at the Chelyabinsk military installation, discovers a portable nuclear bomb is missing. His quest to recover it leads him on an emotionally taxing undercover mission. While on a mission, the colonel learns his beautiful 24-year-old daughter, Karina, a talented dancer, has disappeared. This narrative is both thought-provoking and realistic.
The author incorporates intriguing characters; one character that kept me engrossed is Umar Kasana, a Turkish arms dealer who is attractive, smart, self-assured, and dangerous. His secret operations and unexpected feelings for Karina Kovalenko are engrossing elements of this narrative. His determination to have the woman of his dreams despite his dangerous operations adds a romantic flare to the tale. This particular aspect of the narrative gave it a soothing vibe amidst the chaotic events in the book. The tale includes numerous intriguing characters, but Umar Kasana is a standout character for me.
I have no dislike for the book; the story is well-written with highly entertaining plots that have the ability to keep a reader hooked. The well-developed characters and the main themes, which include religious and political extremism, terrorism, and undercover missions, are fascinating. The tale addresses real-life issues and events, such as the 2001 9/11 attack. The flawed views of terrorists and the havoc they cause. The plots come to life as one reads through the pages, and the conversations and plot scenes are movie-worthy.
The book was well-edited and error-free as the author did a great job. I would definitely read more books from the author. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it was highly entertaining and engrossing. I enjoyed reading this book. I recommend this book to readers who love themes of action and romance in books. People who like the idea of undercover missions and religious and political extremism in books will appreciate reading this book.
