The book outlines the story of a young boy named Matthew and his journey to pet ownership. It focuses on his bond with a dog named Corky. Matthew, a resident of San Francisco, initially longed for a pet dog but was convinced by his parents to postpone this desire until they moved out of the city. Deciding to make the best of what was possible, he offered to walk all neighboring dogs free of charge. The daily adventures gave him immense joy, and he was happiest in their company.

Eventually, news of the family's relocation to Boulder, Colorado, due to his father's job transfer, arrived. This news filled Matthew with immense delight as it presented Matthew with the opportunity to choose a pet of his own. At the shelter, he and the rest of the family instantly bonded with a charming Irish setter named Corky. Matthew discovered that Corky was specially abled. Did Matthew overcome his hesitations about having a specially-abled pet dog? To learn about Matthew's ultimate decision regarding Corky, pick up a copy of Corky, the Three-Legged Dog: Corky Finds a Home, authored by Ronald Arne Saetermoe.

Inspired by his wondrous childhood and extraordinary adventures, the author skillfully presents an insightful narrative featuring a resilient three-legged dog, Corky, and a compassionate young boy, Matthew. I appreciate that the simple storyline encapsulates several valuable lessons. Firstly, it conveys that a pet is not a mere playmate and needs to be cared for. The author beautifully sensitizes young minds to be kind, emphasizing empathy and compassion for animals and humans, regardless of their limitations.

Specially-abled Corky's infectious enthusiasm serves as an inspiration. The narrative weaves a powerful message, encouraging readers to reject limitations imposed by physical disabilities and to find happiness in all circumstances. The seamless integration of this message serves as a heartfelt tribute to individuals with special needs, adding depth to the story.

Furthermore, the story highlights the parental guidance and support offered to Matthew, demonstrating their approach to educating Matthew on the responsibilities that pet ownership entails and also allowing him to make independent decisions.

The delightful illustrations will captivate young readers. The vibrant color schemes and expressive characters were spot-on and complemented the simple vocabulary with short sentences. These aspects of the book foster comprehension and have the potential to instill a love for reading. The editing is spot-on, as the entire book is free of errors. Considering that I have nothing negative about the storyline, layout, or illustrations, I rate this book five out of five stars.

The story encourages acceptance and compassion toward specially-abled people and animals and builds confidence in people with disabilities. Overall, it promotes a more inclusive mindset. The book is perfect for pre-teen kids and all other age groups, highlighting equal treatment, empathy, and compassion for individuals and animals with disabilities.

Pets come with responsibilities. Great way to instill care and concern for coexistence. Great book for kids and families to foster responsible pet ownership.

What a wonderful children's book described by your review! I love your use of the words "specially-abled". It is a fact that those of us with disabilities are able to do things in special ways. This book is a valuable resource for teaching children this valuable lesson. We must have empathy for disabled people and allow them to be accomplished with their special abilities. Having and caring for a disabled pet is a great way to learn how to foster these values. Congratulations to the author, Ronald Arne Saetermoe, for writing this inspiring book and earning a 5-star rating from you.
