NICO by Marlene Rattigan is an amazing adventure story for children. We meet Nico, a family pet cockatoo. He lived with Kim, a little girl, and her parents. He liked to sing, dance, and talk, entertaining Kim and her friends. But Nico became sad when Kim and her mother were away all day. So, Kim and her mother decided to take Nico with them to the flower shop where Kim’s mother worked. The flower shop was on a train station, and Nico enjoyed entertaining the customers. One day, Kim let him out of the cage so he could dance freely. Suddenly, Nico saw Kim getting onto a train. He flew after her, but once he got onto the train, he realized that it was not Kim! Will Nico reunite with his family?

I enjoyed every moment of reading Marlene Rattigan’s NICO. Nico’s adventures were entertaining, engaging, and educational. Nico’s skills and performances were hilarious. The illustrations by the talented Sergio Drumond looked authentic and perfectly connected with the story. In addition, they conveyed the emotions of the characters, bringing the story to life and making it memorable.

The educational aspect of this story is commendable; it teaches both children and parents to look after their pets and keep them out of trouble. In addition, I liked the child-friendly and, at the same time, very informative explanation about sulfur-crested cockatoos.

This story is perfectly written, illustrated, and edited. I did not find a single error or anything to complain about. So, I rate this awesome book five out of five stars.

I agree with Marlene’s intended audience of children aged 4 to 8. The story’s vocabulary, plot, and illustrations are perfectly suitable for this age and, at the same time, offer gently new knowledge about cockatoos. In addition, I recommend this book to parents, grandparents, teachers, and childminders for reading with children.
