[Following is a volunteer review of "First Survivor" by Mark Unger.]
This book is a powerful yet enlightening account of a family's journey through an unimaginable ordeal, especially as it relates to the youngest member of the family. The book recounts the true story of Louis Unger, a young boy diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma, and his family's relentless fight for his survival. With raw honesty and emotional depth, Mark Unger takes readers on an inspiring journey of hope, courage, and familial love.
The story begins when Louis's mother, Mary Ellen, notices something unusual about his walking. This discovery led to the initial diagnosis of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease by a pediatric orthopedist. As Louis's condition worsens, further tests reveal the more devastating diagnosis of neuroblastoma. The story further evinces the battle that follows, filled with numerous treatments, hospital stays, and a rollercoaster of emotions. Mark Unger meticulously documents every aspect of their experience, from the medical procedures to the emotional toll it takes on the family. The book is undoubtedly a testament to the family's determination to find the best medical help and show great courage for their son Louis.
There was a lot about this book that stood out for me. Unger family's unwavering advocacy for Louis is highly commendable and should be a template every family going through a similar challenge should copy. Their determination to challenge medical norms and seek alternative treatments is both inspiring and empowering. Beyond the emotions that come with reading this book, it highlights the significant role that love, family support, and determination play in overcoming critical, insurmountable challenges. This book also hints at the need for continued research and advancements in the treatment of childhood cancers. This book's structure, which includes a well-detailed narrative and a glossary for medical terminologies, enhances readability and ensures that even those without a medical background can follow the story with ease.
While reading, I discovered a few errors that did not have much effect on my reading pleasure. Aside from this, I sincerely found no objections or anything to dislike or criticize about this book. I loved the pictures contained in this book, as they added so much to enriching its content.
This book won my heart, and with no reason to deduct a star, I will rate "First Survivor" by Mark Unger 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend this book to anyone seeking a story of hope and strength, especially for families facing similar challenges.
