Corky, the Three-Legged Dog by Ronald Arne Saetermoe
This heartwarming children's book tells the wonderful story of a boy named Matthew and a three-legged dog named Corky. Matthew is a lovely boy who adores animals. His greatest wish is to have a dog as a pet. However, living in the city, Matthew's parents explain that it's challenging to have a dog in their current home and ask him to be patient until they move out of the city. Patiently, Matthew waits, and one day, his patience is rewarded when his family moves to a small city. Finally, Matthew’s wish comes true, as their new home has a big yard and they are ready to welcome a dog into their family. When they go to the animal shelter, they meet a lovely and playful dog named Corky, with whom the whole family falls in love. However, Matthew gets confused when he discovers that Corky has only three legs. With the help of his mother, Matthew makes a decision, and the happy family finally goes home with a much happier Corky. If you enjoy hearty children's tales, don't miss out on this book.
This inspiring tale, featuring engaging characters and vibrant illustrations, teaches kids the importance of affection, acceptance, compassion, and empathy. With just a few short and easy-to-understand sentences on each page, accompanied by colorful images, this book is perfect for young children. The illustrations require a special mention, as I totally fell in love with them. The well-drawn cartoons are pleasing to the eyes and filled with emotions, bringing the story to life on every page. The lively illustrations are sure to captivate young readers and nurture their love for reading.
The book delivers several important messages. Firstly, it talks about the love for animals. Love is one of the most important things in the world, and we should instill this value in children's minds from an early age. It also encourages empathy by portraying how the animals at the dog shelter felt—some were sad, some were happy, and some were scared. The book also highlights the significance of a happy family. For instance, instead of crying and being adamant, Matthew showed patience and listened to his parents, who, in turn, patiently explained things to him. The book emphasizes the importance of self-acceptance despite challenges. Matthew accepted Corky, a dog with only three legs, showing the value of accepting oneself and others. When parents read this book with their kids, they can teach them about self-acceptance and unconditional love for others.
I highly recommend this book for small kids. Adults who love children's books would also enjoy it. I read this book with my kids, and we loved it. It would be great if this book was the start of a series, as I would love to read more about Matthew and Corky's adventures. I noticed one small error. Other than that, the editing is incredible. There is nothing I dislike in this book. So I rate it 5 out of 5 stars.
