The first in a series of books about a superhero named Toni who performs everyday tasks is Toni the Superhero by R.D. Base. This book is for young readers who are just beginning to explore literacy. The author, a mother of young children, teaches her kids to read using this approach. The book starts with a picture of a young child named Toni dressed in ordinary clothes; the following page features him as a superhero, complete with a red cape; the book then shows him going about his daily business, the first of which involves loving to read books.

This book would be excellent for beginning readers. Young readers benefit significantly from repeated words because they help them retain patterns, maintain focus, and understand concepts. As their vocabulary improves, their trust grows. The idea that a superhero can still be an ordinary child gives the young readers hope that they, too, can be superheroes. What I like best is the lively, vibrant animated illustration. As they turn the pages, a child will find this entertaining and want to return repeatedly.

Nothing about the book bothered me; combining entertainment and education in one cohesive work was a great idea. When learning is fun, children will love to learn. This book entertains and fosters a love for learning, helping children develop their character and become lifetime learners. This book should be available in libraries, daycares, and children's bookshelves. Because there was nothing I disliked and I enjoyed this fun book, I give it 5 out of 5 stars.

The superhero Toni is not just a character in a book; he could become a beloved household name in families with small children. I recommend this book to parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and others who know a small child who would enjoy a simple reading book. Children would enjoy having adults sit down and help them master the words, flip through the pages, and learn about Toni's ordinary life.
