James Raquepau's book, Lann dan: Blades of Destiny, takes readers on a compelling journey through fate and destiny. This captivating fiction explores how destiny can favour one person while disadvantaging another, blending supernatural elements to enhance its intrigue. The narrative delves into themes such as fate, revenge, and pride, centring on a Gaelic warrior in the land of Erin.

The protagonist, Breanna Ban Morna, witnesses her people suffering under the tyranny of the Norvergr warlord, Hakon Skadi. From childhood to adulthood, she harbours a deep-seated hatred for this ruler and plots to overthrow his regime. However, a shocking revelation threatens to alter her destiny. Breanna soon discovers that her intense hatred and desire for vengeance were not solely her own, but were inspired by the gods themselves. She finds herself burdened with the divine responsibility of becoming the gods' champion. This new role propels her on a quest to find Lann dan, a magical weapon that could aid her in defeating the warlord.

I liked the book because of the character, Breanna Ban Morna. The author vividly portrays her as a courageous and passionate heroine. Breanna's dedication to her people drives her to become one of the most formidable warriors in the story, and her fervour to liberate her people fuels her resolve to challenge the evil warlord. In my opinion, Breanna's tenacity and resilience earn her the support of the Tuatha gods in her quest.

I disliked the book because of the inclusion of a foreign language that was not adequately interpreted. The frequent use of this language, with only a few words translated, made it challenging to navigate the story. This lack of clarity somewhat hindered the reading experience. Despite this, it is a remarkable work of creativity and the book was professionally edited. Its captivating narrative and engaging storyline make it a standout piece. I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars for its artistic quality and ability to hold the reader’s attention from beginning to end.

The use of terms in a made-up language is tricky, as it can add autenticity to a fantasy story but can made it more difficult to follow. Otherwise, this seems like an engaging novel with a strong protagonist. Thank you for your great review!
