Mark Unger’s narrative, First Survivor, delves into the heartbreaking journey of a family battling with their youngest son’s diagnosis of neuroblastoma. As a former healthcare professional, I appreciate their sacrifices, fears, hopes, and determination.

The Unger family’s story navigates through the complex world of medicine, overwhelmed with the information flung at them. There were consultations and protocols for treatments which led them from Connecticut to New York. Their desperate leap of faith defied the prognosis and embraced the possibility of survival for Louis. Mark spent countless hours researching and reaching out to support groups. His wife attended to Louis 24/7. They agreed that communication was the key to bring Louis to a favorable outcome.

Mark’s book captures the emotional upheaval they faced and how they became staunch advocates for their child. We witness the trio going through sleepless nights, whispered prayers, and moments of exhaustion. However, they did not neglect their oldest son who dealt with the ordeal courageously.

First Survivor is not just a chronicle of illness, it is a journal testifying to the human spirit. They were determined to communicate effectively with medical professionals, and they relied on nursing heroes to confer compassion and clinical expertise in the treatment of their child.

I recommend First Survivor not only to families facing similar obstacles, but also to healthcare professionals. It reminds us that every patient is more than just a diagnosis. Although he used minimal profanity, Mark wrote his son’s story free of sexual content. Therefore, it is acceptable to the general public.

In summary, this account was eloquently written and professionally edited. I found no negative aspects within it, thus rating it 5 out of 5 stars. It is a treatise to Louis, a beacon of hope for those navigating through illness. At every flip of the page, we are invited to cheer for him. Through each small victory, we heartily acknowledge his resilience.
