[Following is a volunteer review of "NICO" by Marlene Rattigan.]
This book just won my heart, and it has made its way to the top of my library as one of my favorite books I came across quite recently. NICO by Marlene Rattigan is a book that not only evinces a compelling story for all avid animal lovers but also captures a world beautified by the presence of pets. This book isn’t just for children, because even as an adult, I learned several beneficial lessons from it.
The story focuses on Nico, a pet that finds fun entertaining Kim and her friends. Nico loves to dance, sing, and whistle all day. However, things soon changed during the summer holidays, which made Nico feel lonely and affected Nico’s well-being. As the story progressed, other significant events unfolded, including Nico getting lost on a train. Will Nico find Kim again? Read this book to find out more and also learn about other interesting characters.
Aside from the impressive lessons contained in this book, I found the brief history and description of the sulfur-crested cockatoo on the ending pages of this book to be absolutely amazing. All thanks to this book, as I personally went on further research to know more about this interesting bird. This book also enlightens readers on how to treat stray pets and increases their love for pets. Also, I admire how the author writes in a very simplistic and concise manner, so that children will find the content of this book very easy to comprehend. I loved the colored pages, which would get kids very focused. This book was very well edited and organized, as I found no errors of any kind in it.
If I wished for anything to be improved, it would be the font size and color. For children's books, it would be more appropriate to increase the font size so it can be easier to read over a distance. The font color should be brighter, as it blends with the background color on some pages. Aside from these issues, which did not affect my reading pleasure, I had nothing against this book, and therefore, I will rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
I recommend this book to animal lovers and to all who love children's literature.
