[Following is a volunteer review of "First Survivor" by Mark Unger.]
At one point, a neuroblastoma diagnosis meant no chance of survival. This is what Mark and Mary Ellen Unger faced with their young son. Mark Unger’s book, First Survivor, tells the story of his family's incredible strength and determination during their ordeal.
The Unger family's life changed forever the day before Thanksgiving in 2001. A follow-up visit to the pediatrician for three-year-old Louis' hip problem ended with him needing a blood transfusion.
With a brave spirit, Louis faced his difficult medical journey with a smile, not fully aware of the pain and challenges ahead. His parents, Mary Ellen and Mark supported him through it all, balancing his care with their family life. Mark carefully recorded every part of Louis' recovery. As Louis went through surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy, his amazing strength and his parents' incredible support brought hope and inspiration. Their story shows the power of love and determination during tough times. What I loved about the book was how the Ungers kept detailed notes, especially their careful way of writing down questions. This simple but effective method helped with clear communication and informed decisions, making sure every concern and doubt was fully addressed. By doing this, the Ungers created a team effort where parents, doctors, and caregivers could work together for Louis' recovery. This approach is a great lesson for anyone going through a similar situation.
The writing in the book was professionally edited, and there were no negative aspects. The author did a great job blending different writing styles and visuals smoothly. Each picture was carefully placed to enhance the reading experience without being distracting.
I would give First Survivor by Mark Unger a solid 5 out of 5 stars. It's a touching story that, while sometimes heart-wrenching, offers a good perspective on a tough situation and makes you feel connected to the characters. I didn't find anything to dislike. I would recommend it to everyone.
