Review of McDowell

[Following is a volunteer review of "McDowell" by William H. Coles.]
In the book ‘’McDowell” by William H. Coles, the life of Hiram McDowell follows the story of a sad but great man, a surgeon, genius, philanthropist, a great climber of mountains, and a marathon runner. He is powered by egoism to the extent that he thinks the world was made for him and that he is the center of the universe. He lacks scruples, lies to his wife, and cheats friends and colleagues. There are different themes shown in the story, including arrogance, selfishness, and the untamed passion of gaining power.
Hiram McDowell’s life is riddled with volatile interpersonal relationships, particularly with his spouse Carole and their children Sophie, Ann, and Billie. His children influence him significantly, helping him become a better person. As a husband and co-worker, he is inattentive and manipulative, causing his family to suffer, though his daughter Sophie emerges as a strong and independent character. Hiram shifts his life's focus to seeking knowledge and redeeming his sins and losses. The novel is divided into two parts: the first details his rise from a poor boy to an influential tycoon and the consequences of this path; the second explores his search for the meaning of life and redemption. The book can be analyzed in terms of ambition, responsibility, and ethical issues related to the medical profession, with the themes of betrayal and human nature well interwoven throughout the narrative.
I enjoyed this book very much because the plot was profound and the characters were well-developed, allowing me to form a strong bond with them. I particularly liked Sophie, who was sensitive and loyal. The book included drama, action, twists, and moments of suspense, all of which kept me thoroughly interested throughout.
There is no aspect of this book that I dislike. It was inspiring, informative, and educational, showing me how to work hard despite life's adversities. The book is exceptionally well edited, with no errors. The plot was explained coherently and kept me interested throughout. That is why I give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars .
I recommend this book to anyone who likes reading complex stories about family relationships as well as to students preparing for a career in the sphere of medicine.
