Impact by Mark D. Owen is a science fiction novel, that takes place in space. The protagonist, Tamarind Chase has his life dramatically changed when an accident occurs on the International Space Station (ISS). How will Tamarind Chase find a way to save the scientists stuck at Moonbase Verity after his asteroidal mining trip goes awry?
The book begins with Commander Choi mockingly disregarding the Japanese astronaut's hand signals before creating a deadly crash that impaled his copilot, setting off the calamity. The chaos profoundly affects Tamarind Chase and other alums of the esteemed Pan-National Leadership Institute (PNLI). In search of a fresh direction, Tamarind quits his job at DroneTech, which he co-owns with Flax and Almond - and now spends his time researching asteroid data and thinking back on his complicated relationships and time at PNLI.
I loved how the narrative revolves around Tamarind and his team's need to innovate amid unanticipated events. As they negotiate the fallout from the ISS incident, their leadership abilities are tested. Solving problems becomes crucial as they attempt to save scientists stranded at Moonbase Verity. Witnessing Tamarind's character development was truly remarkable. His motivations, fears, and determination are deeply portrayed, and he becomes a relatable and engaging protagonist. Impact skillfully integrates these themes to create an engaging plot that amuses readers while provoking them to think about the greater consequences of space travel and human endurance.
I also enjoyed the gradual pacing of the novel, intending to draw the readers into the engaging plot, from start to finish. The story unfolds with a blend of futuristic events, scientific advancements, and the associated challenges, creating an immersive experience. Owen incorporates a lot of vivid imagery in his work. He, for instance, depicts the chaotic aftermath of the ISS explosion, with metal pieces flying through space, in a dramatic way. Additionally, he vividly describes the remote lunar base, where scientists struggle mightily to survive against all odds. These descriptions enhance the reader’s experience.
Readers who prefer a faster-paced narrative may not find the book appealing due to its slow pacing. I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars, due to its impeccable editing, free of spelling and grammatical errors. Additionally, the lack of profanity makes the novel reader-friendly.
I recommend the book to young adults, who are fans of science fiction and fantasy, and enjoy a mix of space exploration, technology, and suspense. The plot will also appeal to those who like high-stakes rescue missions and dramatic personal drama.
